Benzoin Absolute is even more effective than the tincture version, traditionally called Friar's Balsam. It is a thicker substance made up of purely Benzoin resin and 50% alcohol, which is added to make the product a useable consistency. Benzoin is extracted from the balsamic resin of the tree and even with the addition of 50% ethanol, the material is quite thick and sticky. The scent is a pleasant, delicate, sweet balsamic with a distinct vanilla fragrance.
Extracted from fine Benzoin resin through solvent extraction, it blends with essential oils and alcohols. However may not mix with carrier oils.
Traditional Uses:
A topical protectant that can be used as an antiseptic and protectant for minor cuts and abrasions, chapped skin, and lips, cracked sensitive areas, small skin fissures and bedsores. It can relieve itching from chilblains, eczema and urticaria (hives).
Benzoin absolute is reputed to have antiseptic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, carminative, deodorant, diuretic, and expectorant properties. Benzoin is widely used as a fixative in perfumes.
Benzoin is also used to help relieve and soothe minor irritation of the nose, throat, and airways ie. laryngitis, croup, when it is mixed with hot water and the steam is inhaled.
It can also be used for adhering tapes to the skin. It is often applied to skin before applying tape or other adhesive bandages. To some degree, it protects the skin from allergy to the adhesive in the tape or bandage, but mostly it makes the tape or bandages adhere much longer. It is also used by athletes for its reputation of toughening skin.
