Amazing day at Parliament House working with Head and Neck Cancer Australia on a national funding scheme for facial prosthetics. This is a tireless effort to close this critical gap in cancer care with four clear actions requested:
1. Fund facial prosthetics nationally
2. Recognise facial prosthetics as essential healthcare
3. Ensure equitable access for all Australians
4. Build a sustainable specialist workforce

The event was attended by Senator Deborah O’Neill and Dr Anne Webster MP, co-chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Cancer Care and Cure group. Also in the room was Senator David Pocock Sally Sitou MP MP and Minister Tanya Plibersek

Pictured is anaplastologist Sophie Fleming speaking alongside an amazing panel of survivor/advocates. Enormous thanks to Ben, Tracey, and Christopher for bravely sharing their stories about the barriers they had accessing facial prosthetics, for Head and Neck Cancer Australia chair Dr Matthew Magarey for so eloquently outlining the issue and for Julie Elizabeth McCrossin for her fabulous talent in hosting the panel. Nadia Rosin Head and Neck Cancer Australia has worked tirelessly on this issue, including also the need for better funding and access to post-cancer dental prosthetics too. Together we will make this happen

A beautiful adhesive retained orbital prosthesis delivered today by our incredibly skilled 1st year graduate anaplastologist Lara Hawker! Swipe for pics of the process. Thanks so much to this wonderful person for allowing us to share the results and the process to help others understand how it works and possible outcomes. We are also incredibly proud of Lara who just graduated with a distinction from The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Masters degree at King’s College London after 3 years of hard work and training. She is shaping up to be an outstanding clinician 🙌🏼

Absolutely LOVED working on this tattoo today. Can’t wait to deliver it in Sydney next week just in time for Christmas. Old worn tattoos, weathered and hazy, really fun to try and match the hand inked Sailor Jerry font for the two missing fingers in an old two word sentence. Hope they bring better luck next time ✌🏽

It’s a lovely thing to see your work improve over the years. Behind the scenes here we are all artists and each prosthesis is agonised over by the maker and goes through the usual creative process “it looks good, hang on no I hate it!, oh actually no it’s good!” (If you are an artist you’ll know 😉). This process is amplified by the fact that sculpting this material is HARD, and 3mm too much or too little material can mean it won’t fit a shoe, could cause pressure or gait issues, or the person won’t like it. That and the fact that once you start to sculpt you only have a couple of days to work with the material before it starts to cure (no pressure!). Even with 3D technologies these prosthetics are still sculpted by hand and coloured by eye, often at a distance without ever seeing the actual patient in person. There is always some natural variation between iterations. It’s both a comfort and a distress to us as makers! We are always thinking of the person who will wear the prosthesis as we make it, their story, our hopes that what we make will help to make life easier or more complete. We sit with each limb for weeks and days, trying to incorporate changed anatomies and bring back symmetry. We can see a plaster cast of an amputation and know who it belongs to without seeing the name on it because we spend so long with each prosthesis, casting, smoothing, designing, creating. It becomes personal to all involved even though sometimes we never may meet the ones who wear our prostheses. The foot in the middle here is a new sculpt , the one on the right is an old version of the same prosthesis from years ago. Looking at this I can see how our techniques and skill improve each year. Thanks to all that choose to use us to make your prosthetics, not a day goes by where we aren’t thinking about how to make them better for you. ✨with love, Sophie and the PAT team

It’s been a huge couple of days in Adelaide at the annual conference. Always an honour to be able to speak amongst such a diverse and multidisciplinary group of cancer care professionals. A reminder too of the amazing work that are doing to advocate and provide resources for people needing facial prosthetics. I (Sophie) joined the executive board for ANZHNCS this year and am humbled by the amount of work this society and the board do behind the scenes, pushing forward collaboration, education and knowledge. Facial prosthetics will continue to be a part of this going forward. Congratulations to President and Convenor for this years wonderful event!
