Wow.
Mushroom is given a robot body — and it actually moves on its own.
Engineers at Cornell University and the University of Florence just built something that sounds like science fiction. They took a living king oyster mushroom, grew its mycelium (the thread-like root network fungi use to sense and communicate) directly into a robot's electronics, and used the mushroom's own electrical signals to control the robot's movement.
No batteries doing the thinking. No code telling it where to go. The mushroom's natural bioelectric activity — the same signals it uses to respond to touch, light, and chemical changes in its environment — was captured and converted into motor commands.
The results were strange and genuinely fascinating. Left alone, the robot twitched and je**ed on its own. When researchers shone UV light on it, it responded differently, proving the mushroom was reacting to its surroundings in real time. Then the team flipped a switch and remote-controlled the robot directly through the mycelium's signal pathway.
They built two versions: a five-limbed soft robot and a four-wheeled vehicle, both steered by fungal impulses.
Why bother? Mushrooms are tough. They survive extreme cold, radiation, and harsh conditions that would fry normal electronics. Researchers believe future versions could monitor soil chemistry in farm fields, catching problems before fertilizer runoff causes algal blooms, or even operate in space.
Science just blurred the line between machine and living organism a little more.
