A 2025 peer-reviewed study put hard numbers on something grounding researchers have been describing for two decades.
Researchers wanted to know if grounding (yes, skin contact with the Earth) actually changes anything at the cellular level.
So they tested it. Properly. Isolated mitochondria, three conditions, peer-reviewed, published in FEBS Open Bio in September.
Here's what they found.
Under grounded conditions, mitochondria produced 5 to 11 percent more ATP. ATP is the molecule your body uses as fuel for almost everything: thinking, moving, recovering overnight.
They also generated 22 to 33 percent less reactive oxygen species. ROS is what drives oxidative stress at the cellular level. Less ROS, less cellular wear.
That's the mechanism the grounding research community has been pointing at for two decades, now measured directly in a lab.
It's in-vitro work, not a human clinical trial. So this doesn't tell us how you'll feel. What it tells us is why so many people who ground consistently describe steadier energy, better sleep, and easier recovery.
If you've been tracking your HRV, looking at your oxidative stress markers, or wondering why your wellness stack isn't hitting like it used to, this one's worth a read.

You've done the supplements. The sleep hygiene. The eight glasses of water. The blue light glasses from sunset. And still, something's off. You're not doing it wrong. You might just be missing one piece. And it's the oldest piece there is. Why this matters Inside almost every cell in your body sits....
