Adults with ADHD have several treatment options that can be tailored to their individual needs, as outlined in the Australian ADHD Guideline (AADPA, 2022).
These include:

👉 Medication: Stimulant medications are commonly used as first-line treatment to reduce symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Non-stimulant medications may also be prescribed depending on individual response and side effects.

👉 Behavioral Interventions: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) adapted for ADHD can help adults develop strategies to manage symptoms such as procrastination, disorganization, and emotional regulation difficulties.

👉 Psychoeducation: Learning about ADHD helps adults understand their condition better, recognize strengths and challenges, and reduce stigma.

👉 Skills Training: Focused training on organization, time management, planning, and problem-solving can improve daily functioning.

👉 Workplace Accommodations: Adjustments at work—such as flexible scheduling or task modifications—can support productivity and reduce stress.

👉 Coaching or Support Groups: These provide ongoing encouragement, accountability, and practical advice from professionals or peers with similar experiences.

A comprehensive assessment by a healthcare professional experienced in adult ADHD is important to develop an effective treatment plan that addresses specific needs and goals.

ADHD is generally considered a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition, meaning that it typically persists into adulthood rather than being "outgrown." According to the Australian ADHD Guideline (AADPA, 2022), many individuals diagnosed with ADHD in childhood continue to experience symptoms as adults, although the way these symptoms present may change over time.

For example, hyperactive behaviors common in children often become less overt in adults, who may instead experience internal restlessness or difficulties with attention, organization, and emotional regulation. While some people may notice a reduction in certain symptoms as they mature, challenges related to ADHD often remain and require ongoing management.

Effective support through behavioral strategies, educational or workplace accommodations, and sometimes medication can help individuals with ADHD lead successful and fulfilling lives across their lifespan.

A stroke can affect much more than physical movement — it can also impact communication, speech, understanding, reading, writing, and swallowing.

Speech Pathologists work with people after stroke to help rebuild communication skills and support everyday participation.

This may include helping someone:
• find words more easily
• improve speech clarity
• understand conversations
• regain confidence communicating with others
• use strategies or tools to support communication

Communication is an important part of independence, relationships, and wellbeing — and support is available. ❤️

If an older person has trouble swallowing or says food feels “stuck", regularly coughs during meals or avoids certain foods, it may be worth speaking with a Speech Pathologist.

Speech Pathologists assess swallowing difficulties (known as dysphagia) and can help with strategies to make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable.

Swallowing difficulties can sometimes increase the risk of:
• choking
• chest infections
• poor nutrition or dehydration
• anxiety around mealtimes

Early support can help people continue enjoying meals with greater confidence and safety. đź’›

Dementia can affect communication in many different ways, including word-finding, following conversations, remembering information, or expressing thoughts clearly.

Speech Pathologists can support both the individual and their family by providing practical communication strategies that reduce frustration and help maintain connection.

Sometimes small changes can make a big difference, such as:
• simplifying language
• reducing background noise
• allowing extra processing time
• using visual cues or routines

Good communication helps people feel included, respected, and connected.🙌

Many people are surprised to learn that Speech Pathologists work closely with older adults.

Speech Pathologists can support older people experiencing:
• swallowing difficulties
• softer or weaker voices
• changes in speech clarity
• communication difficulties after stroke
• memory-related communication changes
• Parkinson’s disease or dementia-related communication challenges

Their goal is to help people stay connected, safe, confident, and independent in everyday life. Support can make a meaningful difference to quality of life at any age. 🙌

There is no shortage of information available online when it comes to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) — but not all of it is accurate, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to sort fact from fiction! This is something we hear often in the clinic, particularly from parents and adults who are just beginning to explore whether ADHD might be part of their story.

ChatADHD was created with this in mind. It’s a free, easy-to-use tool where you can ask questions about ADHD at any time, in either English or Vietnamese, and receive responses that have been reviewed by psychologists and are grounded in evidence-based information.

What we’ve heard so far is that people are finding it a really helpful starting point - somewhere to explore questions, build understanding, and feel more confident about what to do next, whether that’s seeking an assessment, supporting a child, or simply learning more. If you haven’t had a chance to try it yet, we encourage you to register via one of the language links below.

Gardening is about more than keeping plants alive.

For many people, it brings routine, purpose, movement, creativity, and a chance to slow down and connect with the outdoors.

As we age, hobbies we once did easily can sometimes become more physically demanding - but that doesn’t mean we have to give them up altogether.

Occupational Therapists can help people continue doing the activities they enjoy by finding practical ways to make them safer, easier, and more manageable.

Because staying connected to meaningful activities is an important part of wellbeing.🌻

Occupational Therapists work with older adults to manage everyday tasks and maintain independence safely. 🙌

Preparing meals can become more challenging with changes in strength, balance, or energy levels.

You might notice things like:
👉 feeling tired while standing at the bench
👉 difficulty opening jars or packaging
👉 concerns about using knives or the stove safely
👉 losing confidence in the kitchen

Occupational Therapists can help by suggesting practical strategies, adapting your environment, and recommending tools that support safe and manageable cooking.

The goal is simple — helping you stay as independent as possible in your daily routine.🧡

Occupational Therapists can work with you to:
👉 adapt activities to suit your current abilities
👉 find new ways to stay involved
👉 build routines that include meaningful moments

Staying engaged in the things you enjoy can make a real difference to how each day feels. đź’š
