👂Tinnitus Awareness Week (3 Feb – 9 Feb) 2025👂
Tinnitus is commonly described as ringing, hissing, buzzing or clicking. It can sound like crickets, or like the hum of a computer fan or hard drive. It can be constant or occasional, loud or soft, mild or severe and can be heard in one or both ears or somewhere in the middle.
With one in three Australians living with some degree of tinnitus, it can affect many areas of day to day living and can have an impact on mental health and wellbeing.
👂What can cause tinnitus?👂
The exact causes of tinnitus are not fully understood but are frequently associated with damage to the auditory system.
It may be the result of something simple like wax, noise exposure from workplace settings or music, medications and/or hearing loss. It may be associated with other medical conditions affecting the auditory system, or part of a more complex interaction of factors including stress, anxiety or noise trauma.
While there are many possible causes of tinnitus, some people develop it for no known reason.
