If you have visited the Emergency Department in recent weeks, you may have noticed some comfortable new seating upgrades, made possible thanks to a generous $40,000 donation from the wonderful Metung Bloodhounds.

Raised through the group’s Bare to Care calendar, this incredible community donation has helped create a more comfortable, accessible and welcoming space for patients and families during what can often be a stressful time.

We are so grateful for this thoughtful support and the difference it will make for people across East Gippsland.

And fun fact! Did you know the Metung Bloodhounds was formed in 1996 specifically to raise funds to purchase equipment for the Blood Bank at the Bairnsdale Hospital? Hence the Bloodhounds name!

Thank you, Metung Bloodhounds for your support of our health service over 30 years! 💙

Farewell, Carolyn: after 41 remarkable years of nursing at BRHS, Carolyn Morgan is heading into a very well-earned retirement.

Across more than four decades, Carolyn has seen enormous change: from paper charts, handwritten notes and thermometers that needed a good shake, to electronic records and digital systems. She also began nursing in a time when “cut and paste” really did involve scissors and glue.

Through it all, Carolyn’s compassion, wisdom, calm presence and commitment to excellent care have remained constant.

Across her many roles at BRHS, Carolyn has cared for patients and families, supported colleagues, contributed to education and quality, mentored nurses and helped shape the culture of care around her. She has also been known as someone willing to take on the challenges others may have felt a little daunted by.

At her retirement morning tea today, Carolyn reflected that from her very first day at BRHS she felt welcomed and valued. She laughed that many of the nurse managers she worked with had children who had gone to school with her, so she felt as though she had “work mums” everywhere, keeping an eye out for her along the way.

Carolyn, thank you for 41 years of outstanding service, care, wisdom and contribution to BRHS and our community.

There will be many moments ahead when someone feels a little stuck or unsure what to do, and no doubt we will pause and think, “What would Carolyn do?”

You will be greatly missed, but your legacy will remain in the many people you have cared for, taught, supported and inspired.

We wish you every happiness in retirement.

🎉 Happy 102nd Birthday, Leo! 🎉

Today we are celebrating a very special milestone for one of our much-loved Maddocks Gardens residents, Leo Grant, who has turned 102.

Leo has been part of the Maddocks Gardens community since 2021 and is known for his kindness, gratitude, curiosity and wonderful positive attitude to life.

Born in 1924, Leo has lived through extraordinary times and has led a full and adventurous life. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the Airforce during the Second World War and is one of Gippsland’s oldest surviving WWII veterans.

He has farmed in East Gippsland, lived in Italy, embraced Italian culture and food, raised his family in Orbost, and spent many happy years as a much-loved member of the Bairnsdale old time dance group.

When asked about the secret to a long and good life, Leo always says the same thing: a positive attitude.

His family describe him as a wonderful father, a wise and happy grandfather, and one of the kindest people you could meet.

Leo spent his birthday surrounded by family, co-residents and the Maddocks Gardens community, where he continues to enjoy friendship, activities and helping others.

From all of us at BRHS, happy 102nd birthday Leo. What an incredible life and what a wonderful person to celebrate. 💙

Game, set… table tennis! There were plenty of laughs, friendly rivalry and team spirit at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service this week as staff battled it out in our inaugural Men’s Health Week table tennis tournament.

Held at our Day Street campus, the tournament was a fun way to bring people together and spark important conversations about health and wellbeing.

Congratulations to our 2026 BRHS Table Tennis Champion — Lachlan Langston, Procurement and Contract Officer!

A big shout-out also to our finalists, Gavin Johnston from Facilities and Ola Awonusi, Operational Director of Workforce Capability and Development.

Men’s Health Week is a great reminder for all of us to check in on our health. Community members can use our free SISU Health Check Stations until 12 July to check blood pressure, heart rate and other key health indicators.

You can find the stations at the BowerBird Entrance on our Day Street campus, Maddocks Gardens and main street of our Ross Street campus.

Pop in, have a check, and take a small step for your health.

This Men’s Health Week, BRHS is encouraging men in our community to be proactive about their health.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting Australian men, with 1 in 5 men likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime. A simple PSA blood test is an important first step in early detection.

BRHS has a dedicated Prostate Cancer Nurse Specialist, Ashley Leach, who provides care, support, education and coordination for local patients and their families throughout their prostate cancer journey.

Patients do not need a GP referral to access the Prostate Cancer Nurse Specialist service.

Men with a family history or genetic risk are encouraged to speak with their doctor about testing from age 40. Men with no family history should speak with their doctor about testing from age 50.

“At the age of 50, you should be talking to your GP about prostate surveillance, getting your PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test done and finding out what it means if you have a high PSA,” Ashley says.

“I find with my patients that once they feel comfortable talking about it with other men, they say, ‘I never realised how many people at the golf club had it or they knew somebody with it’. Once they’re comfortable to talk about it.”

To contact the BRHS Prostate Cancer Nurse Specialist, email [email protected]

This Men’s Health Week, you can also take part in Walk for Him and help raise awareness for zero deaths from prostate cancer. Learn more: www.walkforhim.org.au
