The knee joint is one of the largest and most important joints in the body. Its main functions are:
1. Support body weight – It bears most of the body's weight when standing, walking, running, and jumping.
2. Allow movement of the leg – The knee primarily acts as a hinge joint, enabling:
◦ Flexion (bending the knee)
◦ Extension (straightening the knee)
◦ A small amount of rotation when the knee is bent
3. Provide stability – Ligaments, cartilage, and surrounding muscles help keep the joint stable and prevent excessive movement.
4. Absorb shock – Structures such as the menisci (cartilage pads) cushion the joint and reduce the impact on bones during activities like walking and running.
From a Bowen Therapy perspective, treatment may aim to:
• Reduce tension in the muscles and fascia around the knee — particularly the quadriceps, hamstrings, calf and muscles around the hip.
• Improve movement and balance through the leg — looking at how the hip, knee and ankle work together rather than treating the knee in isolation.
• Encourage comfortable joint movement by addressing restrictions or tension in the surrounding tissues.
• Support the body's relaxation response, which may help reduce protective muscle tension and make movement more comfortable.
• Consider compensations elsewhere in the body — for example, altered foot, ankle, hip or pelvic movement can change the way forces travel through the knee.
