It’s easy to become complacent about having your flu shot each year, but it’s important to consider the potential consequences of skipping this important vaccination…

The flu is far more than a bad head cold. You can be seriously unwell for weeks, not to mention the possibility of severe complications requiring hospitalisation.

Did you know that cases of the flu are actually increasing? 2025 was the worst Australian influenza season on record, with more than 1,700 people losing their lives to the disease.

It’s also important to think beyond your own health. Infants, the elderly, immunocompromised and chronically ill people are the most vulnerable to influenza. High vaccination rates provide the best protection for the entire community.

BOOK YOUR VACCINATION

All UFS Medical centres are now taking bookings for flu vaccination appointments. For more information or to book an appointment, please visit ufsmedical.com.au/flu

Most UFS pharmacies also offer flu vaccinations for patients aged 5 and over. Go to ufs.com.au/flu to find out more.

Many of us accept regular headaches as a fact of life that we have to learn to live with. But before reaching for the painkillers again, it’s worth considering a visit to your optometrist. Many headaches are caused by eye problems which, if treated correctly, can reduce or eliminate headaches.

There’s no need to suffer unnecessarily. Seek help by visiting UFS Eye Care for a comprehensive examination. Simply walk-in or book online at ufs.com.au/eyecare

With common symptoms such as gritty, watery eyes and a buildup on eyelashes, people often mistake Blepharitis for other eye conditions, or simply attempt to treat the symptoms with eyedrops. However, with our high magnification microscope, our optometrists can accurately diagnose the condition and put you on the path to relief and recovery.

Don’t suffer any longer. Drop in to UFS Eye Care for an examination or book online at ufs.com.au/eyecare

Everybody wants a quick and painless solution but proper diagnosis and treatment are key. Many people don’t know that there are a few different types of conjunctivitis and it requires a medical professional to accurately determine the correct course of treatment.

If you or a loved one is suffering from a suspected case of conjunctivitis, head straight to UFS Eye Care to see one of our highly qualified optometrists, or book an appointment online at ufs.com.au/eyecare

Dry eyes can cause stinging, burning, fluctuating vision, a gritty/sandy feeling, watery discharge and redness. But not all dry eyes are the same. There are many different causes and even more treatment options!

Rather than self-treating with an off-the-shelf eyedrop solution, make sure you see a qualified optometrist who will conduct a thorough eye exam, diagnose the cause of your dry eyes, then choose the right drops for your specific needs.
UFS Eye Care offers walk-in consultations or you can book an appointment online at ufs.com.au/eyecare

Did you know that June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in Australia?

This initiative, led by Bowel Cancer Australia is dedicated to raising awareness, and promoting early detection while furthering research and quality care for those impacted by the disease. Bowel cancer is Australia’s second deadliest form of cancer, and claims the lives of 103 Australians every week, on average - That’s 5,372 Australians per year.

Despite this alarming statistic, 99% of cases can be successfully treated if caught in the early stages.

Early detection saves lives, and regular screening is a key component to catching the disease before symptoms appear. Though your risk increases significantly after age 50, bowel cancer doesn’t discriminate and can strike at any age. Stay vigilant and monitor your body for common warning signs including:
• Changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhoea or constipation
• Blood in your stool, or unexplained bleeding
• Unexplained weight loss or constant, severe fatigue
• Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that does not go away
If you notice any of these changes or have a family history of the disease, it is paramount that you book an appointment and consult your GP as soon as possible. Your GP can help evaluate your personal risk factors, order diagnostic tests, or refer you to a specialist if necessary. Being proactive and starting an open conversation with your doctor is the most important step you can take for your overall bowel health.
