Monday, second week of June.
The paddocks are holding frost until nearly nine or ten am now, and every animal I've worked with this past week has been telling the same story in different bodies: slower. lower. more listening is required.
Here's something I don't think we talk about enough β your horse, your dog, your cat, they're not trying to be difficult when winter makes them different.
That mare who's suddenly spooking at the gate she's walked through a hundred times?
She's not regressing.
Her nervous system is doing exactly what a prey animal's should when the world gets colder and the days get shorter: scanning harder, conserving more, trusting less readily.
It's not a setback. It's biology, doing its ancient job.
The same goes for you, by the way.
If you're moving through June with less spark than May, the answer isn't to push harder.
It's to recognise that your nervous system has its own winter rhythm β and it's been keeping creatures alive through cold seasons for a lot longer than to-do lists have existed.
So this Monday, my invitation is disarmingly simple.
Notice what's already slower in you and let it be.
Notice what your animals are telling you about pace and rest and when to stop performing.
They're not behind on anything.
Neither are you.
We're all just mammals in winter, doing our best with the light we've got. πΏ
