💊🥗 National Nutrition Week – Can Your Diet Affect Your Medication?

It’s National Nutrition Week (11–17 October), and we’re starting with something we often discuss in the pharmacy!

💡 Did you know? What you eat and drink can affect how some medications work.

Here are a few examples:

🥛 Calcium & antibiotics
Dairy products can reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics, such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin.

🥬 Vitamin K & warfarin
Green leafy vegetables contain vitamin K, which can affect warfarin. The key is to keep your vitamin K intake consistent, not avoid vegetables!

☕ Coffee & iron supplements
Tea and coffee can reduce iron absorption. Try separating them from your iron supplement by around 2 hours.

🍊 Grapefruit & medications
Grapefruit can interact with certain cholesterol and blood pressure medications, increasing the risk of side effects.

💊 Before or after food?
Some medicines work best on an empty stomach, while others should be taken with food.

👩‍⚕️ Your pharmacist can help!

Not sure whether to take your medication with food? Ask our friendly pharmacy team. A simple conversation can help you get the most out of your treatment.

🌱 WHAT DOES “GETTING BETTER” ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

When it comes to mental health, progress isn’t always a big transformation.

Sometimes progress looks like:

💚 Getting out of bed a little easier
💚 Sleeping a little better
💚 Going back to your usual routine
💚 Replying to a message
💚 Enjoying something again
💚 Asking someone for help
💚 Making it to your appointment
💚 Taking your medication as prescribed

There may still be difficult days along the way.

Recovery isn’t always a straight line — and a difficult day doesn’t erase the progress you’ve already made.

As Mental Health Care Week comes to an end, remember:

🌱 Small steps are still progress.

Keep going, keep checking in, and seek support when you need it.

🌍💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2026

TOGETHER WE THRIVE

This week, we’ve talked about mental health from many sides — recognising when something isn’t right, asking for help, understanding medicines, and looking after the people around us.

Today’s message is simple:

We do better when we look after each other.

Check in with yourself.
Check in with your family and friends.
Check in with the colleague standing beside you.

Ask:

“How are you, really?”

And when someone answers honestly, take the time to listen.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes being there, listening without judgement and helping someone find support can make a difference.

To our patients, our community, our pharmacy team and our friends and colleagues in healthcare:

💚 Look after yourself. Look after each other.

Because Together We Thrive.

If you need support, speaking with your GP, pharmacist or another health professional can be a first step.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

💚 MENTAL HEALTH AFFECTS US ALL — INCLUDING YOUR PHARMACY TEAM

In community pharmacy, we care for people through some of their most difficult moments.

We listen. We support. We manage medicines. We help people find the next step.

But behind the counter, we are people too.

Pharmacy teams can face yelling, verbal abuse, threats and confronting situations while simply trying to help.

Over time, this can take a real emotional toll.

We have seen great pharmacists and pharmacy staff become exhausted and burnt out. We have seen people need a break, and sadly, we have seen good people leave the industry altogether.

Abuse towards healthcare workers is never acceptable.

But today, we also want to focus on the people around us.

💚 We are incredibly grateful to have such a supportive team around us.

Give your colleague a tap on the shoulder today and tell them:

“You’re doing well.”

And to our previous colleagues and friends who have stepped away from pharmacy because they needed a break:

We haven’t forgotten you.

Whether you return to pharmacy one day or choose a completely different path, we hope you’re looking after yourself.

You were part of our team, you made a difference, and we still care about how you’re doing.

As we approach World Mental Health Day, let’s remember:

Look after your patients.
Look after your colleagues.
Look after yourself.

And please — be kind to the people who are trying to help you. 💚

💚 THINKING ABOUT STOPPING YOUR ANTIDEPRESSANT?

Stopping suddenly isn’t always the best approach.

After taking some antidepressants for a period of time, reducing the dose too quickly can cause withdrawal symptoms.

For some people, a slower, individualised taper may be appropriate.

💊 A safer approach starts with a conversation:

• Speak with your doctor before changing your dose
• Make an individual tapering plan
• Reduce gradually as advised
• Monitor your mood and withdrawal symptoms
• Review and adjust the plan when needed

📱 Have you heard of TaperMate?

TaperMate is an Australian medication-tapering tool that can help patients follow an agreed tapering plan, calculate dose reductions and track symptoms and mood.

For people who need additional support, TaperMate also offers an Australia-wide pharmacist-led telehealth clinic that can help develop an individual tapering plan and communicate with the patient’s prescriber.

⚠️ Never change or stop your medicine based on an app alone. Medication changes should be discussed with your doctor or other appropriate prescriber.

Your community pharmacist can also help answer questions about your medicines and withdrawal symptoms.

💚 Stopping treatment can require just as much care as starting it.

💚 STARTED A MENTAL HEALTH MEDICINE? GIVE IT TIME — BUT KEEP CHECKING IN.

Some medicines used for depression and anxiety can take several weeks before their full benefit is noticed.

During the first few weeks, you may experience side effects or changes in how you feel before you notice improvement.

💊 Remember:

• Take your medicine as prescribed
• Don’t stop or change the dose suddenly without advice
• Arrange a review with your doctor in around 2–3 weeks, or as advised by your doctor
• Ask your pharmacist about side effects, interactions or medicine questions
• Keep monitoring how you are feeling

⚠️ DON’T WAIT FOR YOUR REVIEW if you’re getting worse.

If your symptoms worsen, you feel significantly different, or you develop new or concerning symptoms, contact your doctor promptly.

🚨 If you feel unsafe, have thoughts of harming yourself, or there is immediate danger, seek urgent help or call 000.

💚 Treatment can take time — but changes in how you feel are important to talk about.

💚 NEED MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT? WHERE DO YOU START?

We meet people in pharmacy every day who are struggling with their mental health — and one common question is:

“What do I actually do next?”

In Australia, a typical pathway may look like this:

1️⃣ Talk to someone
Your GP is a good place to start. You can also speak with your pharmacist or another health professional if you’re unsure where to begin.

2️⃣ See your GP
Your GP can assess how you’re feeling, how it’s affecting your everyday life and what type of support may be appropriate.

3️⃣ Mental Health Treatment Plan
If appropriate, your GP may prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan and arrange a referral.

4️⃣ Get the right support
Depending on your needs, this may include a psychologist, other mental health professional, psychiatrist or community mental health service.

5️⃣ Follow-up & review
Mental health care isn’t always a one-off appointment. Your GP and other health professionals can continue to review your progress and treatment.

💊 Where does your pharmacist fit in?

We can listen, help with questions about your medicines and side effects, and guide you towards appropriate support.

You don’t need to know exactly what service you need before asking for help.

💚 The first step can simply be saying: “I need some support.”

🚨 If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

💚 HOW ARE YOU, REALLY?

We often ask, “How are you?”
And the automatic answer is… “I’m fine.”

But how are you really?

Sometimes struggling can look like:
• Feeling overwhelmed more often
• Becoming easily irritated
• Not sleeping well
• Losing interest in things you usually enjoy
• Finding it hard to concentrate
• Pulling away from people

One difficult day is normal. But when these changes persist or begin affecting everyday life, it may be worth talking to someone.

Your GP or another health professional can help you find the right support.

💚 Take a moment today to check in with yourself — and with someone you care about.

This week we’ll be sharing more about mental wellbeing in the lead-up to World Mental Health Day — Saturday 10 October.

• Shortness of breath
• Nausea or vomiting
• Cold sweat
• Dizziness or feeling light-headed

Some people may experience less typical or subtle symptoms, so don’t ignore something that feels seriously wrong.

☕ Happy International Coffee Day!

A little caffeine, a lot of teamwork, and another busy day behind the dispensary!

And coffee isn’t just about keeping us awake. In moderate amounts, it may:
☕ Improve alertness and concentration
🧠 Help reduce feelings of tiredness
🏃 Give a short-term boost to physical performance
🌱 Provide antioxidants and other plant compounds

For most healthy adults, up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is generally considered a safe upper limit — roughly 3–4 standard cups of brewed coffee, depending on strength and serving size.

Of course, more isn’t always better, especially if caffeine affects your sleep, causes palpitations or makes you feel anxious.
