When does a cough become something worth getting checked? 🫁

As Lung Health Awareness Month concludes, it’s a good time to reflect on symptoms that are easy to brush off - including a persistent cough. A cough lasting longer than 8 weeks is considered a chronic cough. Signs to look out for alongside a persistent cough:

- Sore throat or hoarseness
- Mucus dripping down the back of the throat
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
- Persistent urge to clear the throat
- Chest pain or discomfort

🫁❄️ Winter can be tough on the lungs. Cold air, indoor heating, and circulating viruses can all affect respiratory health. Here are 2 simple ways to support lung health this winter:

1️⃣ Use an air purifier: Indoor air quality can reduce in winter when windows stay closed.
2️⃣ Practice breathing through your nose: This warms and filters the air before it reaches your lungs, reducing irritation from the cold.
If you have concerns about your respiratory health this winter, speak to your doctor or a qualified respiratory specialist.

Are respiratory viruses lingering longer than usual this year?

Researchers and clinicians globally are discussing that respiratory viruses such as RSV, influenza, and COVID-19 are circulating longer than usual this season (The Hill, 2026). For those living with asthma, COPD, or other lung conditions, lingering viruses can pose a greater risk to respiratory health.

This Lung Health Awareness Month, it's important to know that respiratory symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for seasonal allergies and this year, that distinction matters more than ever. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Speak to a healthcare professional.

This World Asthma Day, we encourage you to take the time to better understand Asthma. Do you know the difference between an Asthma Preventer and an Asthma Reliever?

🛡️ Preventer: Taken daily to reduce airway inflammation and stop flare-ups before they start. This does not provide immediate relief.
🔵 Reliever: A fast-acting medication that provides immediate relief. This is used during aggravated asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest or shortness of breath.

In Australia, air pollution levels are relatively low (around 6–8 µg/m³), but even these fine particles can enter the lungs and bloodstream. Even low exposure has been linked to:
- Asthma and COPD flare-ups
- Shortness of breath and coughing
- Reduced lung function over time
- Increased hospital admissions, particularly during events like bushfires and dust storms
Air quality can change quickly, and even short-term exposure may affect your breathing.

No, you’re not imagining it. Thunderstorms can break up pollen into very fine particles that are easily inhaled, which may trigger asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing or shortness of breath.

If you have asthma, it’s important to stay aware during storm conditions and follow your asthma action plan.
