🚑 WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY NURSE PRACTITIONER? 🚑

At The Injury Centre, we’re incredibly lucky to have experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners as part of our team across our Narellan and Norwest clinics.

But what exactly is an Emergency Nurse Practitioner?

An Emergency Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice clinician with extensive emergency department experience and advanced university training in diagnosing and managing acute injuries.

Their expertise allows them to:

✔️ Assess acute injuries
✔️ Order and interpret imaging
✔️ Diagnose fractures and soft tissue injuries
✔️ Apply casts and splints
✔️ Develop treatment plans
✔️ Refer directly to orthopaedic specialists when required

At The Injury Centre, our ENPs work alongside physiotherapists and orthopaedic/ plastic/ emergency specialists to provide fast, high-quality care for injuries — helping patients avoid long emergency department wait times where appropriate.

From sports injuries and fractures to children’s injuries and musculoskeletal trauma, our team is here to help guide your recovery from day one.

Footy season is back ......and so are the injuries. Here are the some of the injuries we have seen in our clinic this week from footy.

- Ankle sprains- Low and high ankle sprains after foot getting stuck underneath tackle.
- Ligamentous knee injuries such as MCL and PCL injuries- knee feeling unstable or "giving way" post stepping past the defence.
- Shoulder acromioclavicular (ACJ) separation post landing on point of shoulder.
- Scaphoid fractures post landing on wrist in tackle.

Don’t risk making it worse
Early assessment = faster recovery + safer return to sport
If you or your child gets hurt on the field, don’t guess — get it properly assessed.

Children’s bones are more flexible than adult bones, which means they sometimes break differently.

One common injury in children is called a greenstick fracture.

Instead of the bone snapping completely, it bends and cracks on one side, similar to how a young green branch bends rather than snapping cleanly.

Greenstick fractures often happen after:

• Falls from playground equipment
• Sports injuries
• Falls onto an outstretched arm

Because the bone may only partially break, symptoms can sometimes be subtle, including:

• Localised pain in the arm or leg
• Swelling around the injured area
• Difficulty using the limb
• Tenderness when touched

Even though the fracture may not look severe, proper assessment and treatment are important to ensure the bone heals correctly.

At The Injury Centre Narellan and Norwest, our clinicians regularly assess and manage children’s fractures, including greenstick fractures.

If your child has had a fall or injury and you’re concerned about a possible fracture, our team can help.

Visit The Injury Centre Narellan or Norwest for specialised fracture assessment.

Understanding Fracture Patterns

Not all fractures are the same. The pattern of a fracture depends on the force, direction, and energy involved in the injury.

From transverse and oblique fractures to greenstick injuries in children and compression fractures of the spine — recognising the pattern helps guide the most appropriate treatment plan and recovery pathway.

At The Injury Centre, we provide comprehensive fracture assessment and management in a community-based setting.

✔ No referral required
✔ Imaging on site
✔ Specialist-led fracture care

If you suspect a fracture, early assessment matters.
