You may have seen recent headlines saying that acupuncture doesn’t improve IVF success rates.

As always, the headline doesn’t tell the whole story.

The review concluded there is currently no clear evidence that acupuncture improves live birth rates, but it’s worth looking at how the studies were done. Many involved just 2–3 standardised treatments around embryo transfer, which is quite different from how fertility acupuncture is typically practised.

A recent 2026 study found that women with diminished ovarian reserve who received acupuncture had greater improvements in antral follicle count (AFC) compared with a sham (placebo-style) acupuncture group.

Researchers also observed improvements in anxiety scores during treatment.

The study suggested acupuncture may support ovarian function through effects on:
• blood flow
• inflammation
• oxidative stress, and
• regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.

While more research is still needed as always, these findings are encouraging and add to the evidence exploring acupuncture as a supportive therapy in fertility care 💫

The most comprehensive review of acupuncture research has recently been published, called ‘The state of evidence in acupuncture: A review of metaanalyses and systematic reviews of acupuncture evidence (update 2017-2022)’. The review builds upon the ‘Acupuncture Evidence Project’ which was published in 2016, with an additional 862 high quality studies assessed.

Not only does the review confirm acupuncture’s evidence of positive effect for female fertility but it also confirms evidence of acupuncture’s potential positive effect for:
• breech presentation
• chronic pelvic pain
• dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
• endometriosis
• erectile dysfunction
• in vitro fertilisation (IVF)
• labour pain
• polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
• premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

The fertile window... many of us panicked in our younger years when we learned that it was up to 5 days long, but later wished it was longer when we decided we wanted babies 🙃 Knowing when you ovulate is key to knowing when you’re fertile. Irregular ovulation, which occurs at different times each month, may be improved with treatment as hormones become more regulated. As can the quality & quantity of fertile mucous - do not underestimate the importance of fertile cervical mucous! 💧It helps nourish s***m, gives them a super highway to travel on, and allows them to camp out and wait longer til that egg drops at ovulation.
