The sun is not our enemy. It is one of God’s wonderful gifts to us, freely given and essential to life.
For generations, people worked outdoors, children played in the sunshine and our gardens depended upon its warmth. Yet today, many people have become so frightened of the sun that they avoid it altogether.
Sunshine plays an important role in supporting our natural circadian rhythm, our mood and the production of vitamin D in the skin. But, as with so many things in life, wisdom and balance are important. Allow your skin to become accustomed to the sunshine gradually, enjoy the gentler morning and later-afternoon sun, and never remain in strong sunlight long enough to burn.
I often say that the body has been wonderfully designed. Give it clean air, pure water, nourishing food, adequate rest, movement and sensible sunshine, and you are giving the body the conditions it needs to function at its best.
We don’t need to fear nature. We need to learn how to live wisely with it.
