I don’t want to be ageist or sexist but it’s always older men who fit this bill. I wouldn’t hold a grudge if they asked ā€œSo what do you do in your role?ā€, rather the conversation is filled with remarks and assumptions such as ā€œDo you just put babies on a b**b?ā€, ā€œPeople actually pay you for that?ā€ or ā€œBottle feeding would be easierā€.

My role spans from conception to weaning and everything in between, covering all feeding methods. Sometimes it’s reassurance, often clinical issues and sometimes incredibly complex mothers and babies.

So yeh old mate, I do way more than you could ever imagine, I never bang a baby on a b**b, I’m highly skilled and it’s my sole income, and s**t still goes down with bottle feeding šŸ¤™šŸ¼

Reminder, this message is to never shame labour and birth choices. The purpose is to create a conversation and awareness that is lacking in the consent conversation in maternity care.

I have been witness to countless conversations where mothers have asked what the risk is to their baby and almost always this information is lacking. I have personally never witnessed any inclusion of information about the impact interventions can have on breastfeeding. Perhaps providers aren’t aware, but unless a dire emergency, this information should be standard.

Birth does not occur in a bubble. Babies are not passive passengers and experience birth too.

Happy International Midwives Day to all my incredible colleagues. It’s truly one of the most wonderful and sacred sisterhoods to be a part of. I find this IMD a bit odd. It’s been 2 years since I’ve been at a birth, the last was my own. I haven’t returned to hospital midwifery but am also not a homebirth midwife. I fall in the odd void that many others do to. The midwives who were burnt out, who pivoted into other areas of health, who chose to support women in a different capacity.

I miss birth. I miss working directly alongside colleagues. This midwifery is lonely, there’s less appreciation away from the birth space (IYKYK), but that doesn’t make this kind of midwifery any less valuable or important. I get to practice however the bloody hell I want, and that is so incredibly soul fulfilling. I get to spend quality and quantity time with clients. Few midwives have that opportunity despite the importance of our role.

Here’s to many more years of wading my way through whatever the heck it is kind of midwifery I find myself in and here’s to my colleagues finding joy, purpose, value, respect and remuneration for the countless unseen women’s work that we do everyday.

I am SO thrilled to continuously hear from colleagues how they are trying to support clients with optimal fl**ge sizing. I’m handing out the virtual high fives. But if I’m really honest… I’ve had multiple clinicians reach out because they are having their own crisis of confidence. They are *trying* but clients are experiencing pain, trauma or poor milk flow. For some they have reverted back to standard fl**ge sizes.

Can you trust me to walk with you through this? After far too many requests I’ve finally made a replay of the Fl**ge Fitting Workshop available. It’s 75 mins from woah to go, and if you have any questions or need to trouble shoot, I am only a message away. I’d be honoured to guide you and help you feel capable and confident.

April is autism awareness month. This either directly impacts you, or your knowledge, understanding and empathy will impact someone in the future.

While this post is reflective of the challenges and reframing the need for inclusive support, please know that there is also joy in there. Autistic babies who are well regulated will not be without challenges, but they are still the same beautiful soul they’ll grow into.

Please note that in terms of language I have chosen my own preference and the one that the majority of the autistic community prefer- autistic person compared to person with autism. This is different to how we articulate almost every other health condition or neurodevelopment disorder. However for autistic people, this language preference comes from a place of autism being who they are at their core. It is not something that they carry in addition to them. I acknowledge that this isn’t everyone’s preference though.

If I had a dollar for every time I had a family say that multiple practitioners have ruled out a tongue tie, but they later say ā€œOh no one has done what you have doneā€ when using a gloved finger in bubs mouth…. I’d be on a yacht!

It can also work the other way… sometimes we are so caught up in the appearance of a frenulum that we don’t look at the function. Sometimes there are other issues and jumping to a surgical release a) might not be needed, and b) make things worse!

I have worked with many wonderful midwives and LC’s but this was never part of my standard training. Midwives als receive more breastfeeding education than any other health professional, but it’s sub-par unless you do additional work. Tongue ties and oral function assessments are simply and sadly not standard for majority of health professionals unless they seek out the knowledge and skills. If in doubt, observe what someone is doing and ask them questions. If they don’t do these three things and haven’t got additional experience, they are unlikely to be able to give you clarity or confidently guide you through the potential root cause of your challenges.
