Why I Wrote This Book
When I first began writing this book, I thought I was writing about healing the broken family.
Not “broken” in the way we usually understand it, but deeply disconnected.
Because a family can remain together, share a home and love one another, yet still be profoundly disconnected.
A child can be surrounded by people and feel completely alone. They can learn that their feelings are too much, their needs are inconvenient or their truth is unsafe to express.
When disconnection is all we have known, we do not recognise it as dysfunction. Instead, we assume that we are the problem, or the one with the problem.
So we adapt.
We learn not to need too much, feel too much or say too much.
We become the responsible one. The successful one. The invisible one. The difficult one. The one who holds everything together.
Then we carry these ways of surviving into adulthood, into our relationships, our choices, who we become and what we reach for when life becomes too painful.
But we cannot un-need what human beings are born to need.
Safety. Care. Understanding. Connection. Love.
Our needs do not disappear simply because it once became unsafe to have them.
A part of us still longs to be loved, understood and met. Another part is doing everything it can to ensure we are never hurt that way again.
This is the conflict at the heart of so much human suffering.
It is why we can desperately want something and resist it at the same time. Why we return to behaviours that hurt us. Why we remain in relationships that diminish us. Why we push away the love we long for. Why we abandon ourselves while hoping someone else will stay.
I wrote this book to help us understand that conflict.
To look beneath the behaviours we judge and recognise what they have been trying to protect.
Because drinking, smoking, compulsive eating, overworking, withdrawing, controlling and pleasing are not simply failures of discipline.
They are attempts to manage pain, find relief and meet needs we may not even know how to name.
This book is about recovery in its deepest and broadest sense.
It is about understanding who we became to survive, releasing who we no longer need to be and rebuilding the relationship we have with ourselves, others and life.
It brings compassion to what shaped us, but it does not leave us there.
Because understanding is not where the work ends.
It is where responsibility begins.
The responsibility to tell the truth. To face what hurts. To stop abandoning ourselves. To stop allowing our pain to become the pain we cause. To choose who we become from here.
And beneath all of it is love, not simply as something we feel or receive, but as a practice.
Love is how we listen. How we respond. How we tell the truth. How we remain present. How we repair. How we care for what is vulnerable within ourselves and one another.
That is why I wrote this book.
Because when we understand what lies beneath our behaviour, we no longer have to remain trapped within it.
We can begin to choose differently.
We can begin to find our way back.
Back to ourselves.
Back to connection.
Back to truth.
Back to love.
Throughout this journey, I have also written more than 200 articles exploring addiction, relationships, coping, love, life and purpose. These writings were created both for my own understanding and to support my clients through their journeys.
I have now brought them together into a growing resource library, much of which will be available free of charge.
If you would like access, comment LIBRARY below. When it opens within the next two weeks, I will make sure you receive priority registration.
With so much love and care,
