Sometimes, life doesn't go perfectly, and for many of our clients, that can be incredibly distressing. We see it when a child tears up a drawing because of one misplaced line, or when someone avoids a task because they're afraid of getting it wrong. The fear of making mistakes can feel huge.
As OTs, we know perfectionism can make learning new things difficult. When anxiety takes over, engagement drops and frustration rises.
One of my favourite ways to challenge this is through The Scribble Game.
ποΈ How It Works:
β’ The Mess Up: Close your eyes and draw a random scribble on a piece of paper.
β’ The Reframe: Turn the page, view it from different angles, and find a hidden shape, animal, or object within the scribble.
β’ The Masterpiece: Use markers, pencils, or paint to transform the scribble into a piece of art.
π§ Why This Works:
β’ Builds Cognitive Flexibility: Encourages children to see opportunities instead of mistakes.
β’ Boosts Distress Tolerance: Helps them work through an imperfect starting point.
β’ Shifts the Focus of Control: They can't control the scribble, but they can control how they respond to it.
β’ Lowers the Stakes: Starting with a mess removes the pressure to be perfect.
We're not just creating artβwe're helping build the skills needed to adapt when life doesn't go according to plan.
