Posture is that dreaded word people hate physios talking about😩

But honestly, we should embrace prioritising our posture🙌…for so many reasons✨including our cognitive 🧠 and emotional ❤️ health! Not to mention reducing the strain on our joints 🦴

Many studies show upwardly orientated and expansive postures are linked with higher self-esteem 💪, more arousal ⚡, increased positive mood 😊 and lower fear 😌 when compared with slumped postures.

Studies have also shown improved cognitive performance 🧠📈 such as increased task persistence, faster processing speed ⚙️ and improved rates of speech 🗣️

So how do we get and maintain good posture?
Well, it’s simply a skill 🎯

Just like an athlete 🏃‍♀️, we need to learn it 📚, train it 🏋️, make it automatic 🔁, and then use it or lose it ⏳

🕸️ Fascia is a web of connective tissue surrounding all our muscles, bones, tendons, nerves, and organs. It is one continuous network throughout our bodies.
It used to be thought of as a “filler” substance… but we now know fascia is alive! ✨

🧠 It is full of nerve endings and even contractile tissue! Fascia is innervated by millions of sensory receptors, making it even more sensitive than our skin. It is also intimately connected with our central nervous system, having a huge impact on many of our bodily functions.

🔄 Stimulation of the mechanoreceptors in fascia can change muscle tone, fluid dynamics, and the sympathetic tone of our nervous system.

⚠️ Stress, trauma, emotions, poor posture, and inefficient movement patterns can cause our fascia to become dehydrated, stiff, and develop adhesions… limiting its ability to slide and glide with movement.

🤲 Fascia responds well to the deep, sustained-pressure techniques of myofascial release (MFR). Regular MFR helps restore the integrity, hydration, and pliability of our fascial network—allowing improved movement and reduced pain and stiffness.

🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️ Everyone’s body structure is different and movement patterns are unique, so key areas of fascial release may vary from person to person.

🚶‍♂️The way we move and hold ourselves contributes to the stress load on our bodies ➡️🧠😬. We can unload our mind and remove external stressors, but if we don’t change the way we move, we’ll remain stuck in a stress-laden state😩.

Misalignment and poor posture mean your body has to work harder to stay upright during daily life🤕. This leads to chronic compensations and a constant state of physiological stress in your body—and subsequently your brain ⚠️🧠.

So how do we address this? 🤔
✨ Use release techniques to help your body find better alignment
✨ Then teach your system to actively return there more and more often

Admittedly, there are a few finer details, but this is essential for creating the foundation of a strong, efficient, pain-free body🤸‍♂️💚.

If you don’t know where to start this year… I suggest beginning with some myofascial release 🧘‍♀️. Then talk to someone who can assess your body and create an individualized movement plan just for you📋.

The weeds were creeping in, it was looking overrun and I felt like the only way was to dig it all up and start afresh. As I was just about to stop digging, right at the bottom of the garden bed these golden gems appeared ✨ 🌟
It was a timely reminder that there’s often so much growth beneath the surface…..even when you can’t see it yet and even when the results haven’t quite blossomed yet. Keep planting and nourishing those seeds and one day the garden will bloom🌱🌼 🌹

Kids playing basketball🏀 in the north of our state don’t get the same opportunity to play regular, high level competition as our southern counterparts do. It’s just simple, they don’t. I experienced it as a player and I see it all the time now as a coach. It’s no one’s fault, it’s just simple numbers…larger distances, smaller populations, fewer resources.
But I’m so grateful for and proud to be part of an organisation like North Coast Basketball that aims to provide development and experience in this gap, allowing kids in our regional areas to take their game to the next level and be exposed to more high level competition than they otherwise would be. Thankyou Robert Linton🙏🏀
