Masking is not something that only happens at school.

A child may mask anywhere they feel pressure to fit in, meet expectations, avoid negative reactions or hide what they are finding difficult.

That might be at school, but it can also be at parties, clubs, swimming pools, shops, friends’ houses, relatives’ homes or other social settings.

And because masking can look like coping from the outside, it is easy to miss just how much effort is going on underneath.

Supporting a child who masks means looking beyond the behaviour we can see. Creating safety. Noticing the signs of exhaustion. Respecting sensory and communication needs. And, importantly, allowing genuine time to recover afterwards.

A child appearing “fine” does not necessarily mean their nervous system is regulated.

Sometimes the place where they finally unravel is simply the place where they feel safest to stop holding everything together.
