Sleep and breathing facts every parent should know 👇

1. Mouth breathing is not normal, lazy, or just a bad habit. There's always a cause.

2. Ear infections are linked to sleep and breathing disorders. Age is not a good enough explanation for chronic infections.

3. Snoring is not cute, funny, or normal. At any age. Snoring is the sound of someone struggling to breathe.

4. Large tonsils can block the airway (with or without tonsillitis).

5. Children do not grow out of sleep and breathing disorders. They grow into new symptoms.

6. Sleep and breathing are closely linked with dental and facial growth. Small jaws and crowded teeth aren't just cosmetic problems.

7. Your GP and ENT can give you medical opinion and medical treatment (which is great). But they are not the only health professionals involved in airway health.

If all you've been hearing is some version of "they'll grow out of it" or "lots of kids mouth breathe" or "you need chronic tonsillitis for an ENT referral" — you're finally in the right place.

I work with families Australia-wide to find the underlying causes behind crowded teeth, mouth breathing, and poor sleep.

You may know hay fever as a seasonal annoyance. But it's proper name - allergic rhinitis - signal something more significant: chronic inflammation of the nasal airway.

In this episode of The Face Place Podcast, we cover:

👉 Why "hay fever" undersells what allergic rhinitis is and does

👉 The impact on sleep, eating, mood, and regulation

👉Signs and symptoms to look for in your child

👉The allergic march — how eczema, food reactions, asthma, and enlarged tonsils and adenoids connect to the bigger picture

Naturopath and Nutritionist, Laila Helena from Oh Healthy Baby joined me on The Face Place Podcast to explain a scenario I see all the time here at The Face Place:

Children with a history of cow's milk protein allergy or intolerance going on to experience enlarged tonsils and adenoids later in childhood.

In this episode, we cover:

• What CMPI and CMPA actually are, and why babies are more vulnerable

• The gut-immune connection that links early food reactions to later ENT issues

• What gut repair looks like, and why the early years are so impactful

• Other patterns Laila commonly sees alongside dairy reactions and enlarged tonsils

I'm not anti-ENT.

In fact, I recommend ENT assessments all the time. Because they do play an important role in your child’s sleep and breathing health.

At your child's ENT appointment you will find out if they need...

🧐Investigations such as, x-Rays, hearing or allergy testing, or sleep study.

⚕️ Treatments such as medication or surgery.

At your child's ENT appointment you (probably) WON'T...

👉 Get a thorough review of your child's full health history including birth, feeding and eating, diet, mood, dental health, oral habits and sleep behaviours.

👉Be given information about Early Intervention Orthodontics, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, bodywork, nasal hygiene, re-establishing nasal breathing, and helpful products.

👉Have much time to discuss everything and ask questions.

👉Leave with a comprehensive written summary of findings, referral recommendations and at-home strategies.

👉Finally make sense of so many things you've been concerned about for years.

And this is exactly where I come in 🤗 Your ENT should be part of your team, not the only player.

🙋‍♀️I'm Mel, an Oral Health Therapist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist at The Face Place. I work with families online, Australia-wide.

If you're looking for support for mouth breathing and sleep issues that goes beyond the ENT appointment, feel free to reach out! I’d love to help you figure out what might be going on and what support could look like.

If you’ve asked your GP or ENT what you can do about your mouth breathing toddler, and walked away with no real answers...

We just became best friends 🙏 Because this is exactly what I do.

I help parents understand why their toddler is mouth breathing in the first place and what is causing things like:

• large tonsils
• large adenoids
• recurring ear infections
• snoring
• restless sleep
• waking through the night

And most importantly — what you can actually do to support things at home.

Do you know the night time signs and symptoms of sleep and breathing disorders in children?

There are so many signs and symptoms linked to sleep and breathing difficulties in children, far more than most parents are aware of.

Some can be seen during the day. Others show up at night.

When I first started working in children’s sleep and breathing, I realised there was plenty of information to share with parents, but no simple tool to bring it all together.

And because I do love an acronym… I made one.

The SLEEPING Signs are a simple awareness tool to help parents notice some of the common night time signs and symptoms linked to sleep and breathing difficulties in children.

SLEEPING stands for:

S – Snoring or Audible Breathing
L – Lots of Movement
E – Exhausted in the Morning
E – Enuresis
P – Posture
I – Interrupted Sleep
N – Nightmares or Night Terrors
G – Grinding Teeth

If you’ve noticed some of these signs in your child and you’re wondering what might be going on underneath it, that’s exactly the kind of thing I help parents explore in consultation.

✨ Telehealth appointments are open Australia-wide.
If you’ve been noticing these patterns and want some answers, I’d love to help.

A question I get asked a lot:

“When should I start looking into mouth breathing or an open-mouth posture in my child?”

My answer? Always. Because in my work, it’s never something I’d ignore.

If a child is mouth breathing, regularly resting with their mouth open, snoring, taking a long time to chew, or their sleep just doesn’t seem settled… there's something worth exploring underneath it.

And the key here is this:

Different causes = different support

It may may be related to:
👉 tongue, lip or jaw function
👉 chewing and swallowing
👉 oral habits
👉 early dental development

As a parent you might notice these things, but not know what’s normal, what’s connected, or where to even start. That’s exactly what my consults are for.

In my 90-minute online Oral Function Consultation, we take a thorough look at what may be contributing and turn it into clear, practical next steps that suit your child.

✨ Telehealth appointments are open Australia-wide.
If you’ve been noticing these patterns and want some answers, I’d love to help.
