🌸 Understanding Infertility Through Chinese Medicine 🌸

In Chinese medicine, fertility is closely linked to the balance of our body's internal systems. Here are some key factors that might affect conception:

Kidney Deficiency: The Kidneys are the foundation of life and play a big role in reproductive health. When Kidney Qi or Essence is low, it can impact fertility and sexual function.

Blood Deficiency: Blood nourishes the uterus and supports a healthy menstrual cycle. If your Blood is deficient, it might not fully support your reproductive organs, making conception challenging.

Qi Stagnation: If Qi (your body’s energy) isn’t flowing smoothly, it can cause issues like irregular periods and ovulation problems, which affect fertility.

Cold in the Uterus: Cold can contract the reproductive organs, hindering conception. This might be due to eating too many cold foods or exposure to cold environments.

Dampness and Phlegm: These can block the reproductive channels, affecting ovulation and implantation.

Emotional Factors: Stress and emotional imbalances can disrupt Qi flow, particularly in the Liver, impacting fertility.

During consultation, I often mention that “every pain came from your blocked meridian”.
What does it mean?

In Chinese Medicine theory, it is believed that disease comes from an imbalance that leads to a blockage in the flow of qi—the vital energy or life force thought to regulate your spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health.

Meridians (energy pathways) can become blocked or communication through the meridians can become stagnant usually due to stress, illness and poor lifestyle habits. This can wreak havoc to the meridian flow and therefore dysregulate the whole system resulting in illness and chronic pain.

Acupuncture is intended to remove blockages in the flow of qi, and restore your qi, and boost your health.🦾

Start your morning with a glass of warm water!

In chinese medicine theory, water is considered a "Yin" substance or in other words it is cooling substance.
That's is why we need to make it a bit more "Yang" by adding heat.

Our digestive system needs adequate heat or fire to be able to break down food and liquids. In Chinese medicine, we refer to the stomach as the “cooking pot”. This cooking pot needs a constant fire underneath it in order to work properly and to break down our foods. The cooking pot with the help of the heat underneath will transform the food we eat into nutrients which are then sent to different parts of the body.

Continuous consumption of cold water will actually put out our stomach fire. Uh oh!! What will then happen is that our body’s digestive system has to work harder in order to heat up enough to aid this digestive fire. This forces the digestive system to essentially borrow energy from other systems in the body. Systems like our reproductive system for example. This can then deplete the reproductive system of it’s energy (called Qi in Chinese medicine).

When our stomach fire is put out, this leads to slow digestion, malabsorption, bloating, gas, weight gain, and stomach pain that gets better with warmth.

When asked about this in clinic, I do recommend to my patients to have a diet mainly consisting of warm/hot liquids and cooked foods than cold. A good rule of thumb is the 75%/25% rule. 75% warm versus 25% cold.

If you’re going to drink cold liquids, try to do this in between meals as this won’t disrupt our digestion as much.

Caffeinated drinks like black tea and coffee don’t obviously count as your warm liquid intake as they have a diuretic effect, not a hydrating effect.

Consider adding honey or lemon to your hot water for taste or drink non-caffeinated herbal teas.

Make sure to boil the tap water and don’t have hot water directly from the tap.

Best of luck with this simple little tip!
