Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, we honour those who have been lost by su***de, people with lived and living experience, and the families, kin and communities impacted by su***de.

In 2024, 306 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people died to su***de, the highest number ever recorded. While safe and compassionate conversations are essential, changing the narrative must also mean changing the systems and conditions contributing to these unacceptable outcomes.

Our media release calls for governments to close the gap between commitment and implementation through sustained investment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions, shared decision-making, culturally safe services and transparent accountability.

Today, on Gayaa Dhuwi Day, we mark the anniversary of the Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Declaration, launched on 27 August 2015.

For more than a decade, governments have recognised the importance of the Declaration and committed to its implementation. With the National Mental Health and Su***de Prevention Agreement being renewed, there is a critical opportunity to turn those commitments into funded implementation, stronger accountability and lasting system reform.

Our media release sets out what we believe the renewed National Agreement must deliver to achieve outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and su***de prevention.

Have you read our submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs inquiry into racism, hate and violence?

Our submission calls for governments to move beyond symbolic responses and address racism through truth-telling, self-determination, enforceable accountability, cultural safety, workforce protection and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led reform.

At a time when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander su***de rates remain devastatingly high, responses to racism must be embedded across health, mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, su***de prevention, justice, education, child protection, online safety and Closing the Gap reforms.

Gayaa Dhuwi is calling for national action that recognises racism as a serious and preventable harm to social and emotional wellbeing, safety, service access and community life. This action must ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, culture, evidence and authority are central to the systems meant to support our Peoples.

On National Sorry Day 2026, Gayaa Dhuwi is calling on governments to move from apology to action.

Truth-telling, healing and accountability are essential to justice for Stolen Generations survivors, their families and descendants.

Almost 30 years after the Bringing Them Home Report, too much remains unfinished. ’s From Sorry to Action plan provides governments with a practical, survivor-led roadmap across healing, records, redress, education, workforce, governance and accountability.

Gayaa Dhuwi supports this Action Plan and calls on all governments to work with Stolen Generations survivors, descendants and organisations to invest in survivor-led healing, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled services, and culturally grounded social and emotional wellbeing supports.

The 2026–27 Federal Budget signals a serious risk of more of the same for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and su***de prevention.

Gayaa Dhuwi welcomes continued investment in critical crisis supports, including 13 Yarn, but warns crisis services cannot carry the weight of a system that is not reaching people early enough.

We are calling for urgent investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led mental health and su***de prevention strategies, an independent National Mental Health Commission, and a dedicated social and emotional wellbeing schedule in the next National Mental Health and Su***de Prevention Agreement.

11/05/2026

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has confirmed what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, experts and organisations have said for decades: Australia must stop criminalising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

This is not simply a youth justice issue. It is a human rights issue, a racial discrimination issue, and a social and emotional wellbeing and mental health issue.

Gayaa Dhuwi is calling on all Australian governments to urgently raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 14, and to invest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led alternatives that keep children connected to family, culture, community, care and Country.
