🏆 Team BNB Coaching Crews 🇦🇺

One thing that often gets overlooked at major competitions is just how much work goes on behind the scenes.

At this year's Australian Powerlifting Championships, BNB had five separate coaching crews working throughout the day, helping our athletes navigate attempts, warmups, equipment checks, nerves, celebrations, disappointments, and everything in between.

🔹 Coach Bon Bon & Assistant ESB
Coaching Kenny & Scarlett

🔹 Coach GPG & Assistant Connor
Coaching Kim & BB

🔹 Coach Lala & Assistant Ryan
Coaching Jax & Christine

🔹 Coach Corndog & Assistant Amazon
Coaching Louis, Xavier, Myles & John

🔹 Coach Michael & Assistant PP
Coaching Mitch, DJ & Jack

For many lifters, the platform is only a few minutes of their day. The coaching team is there from first warmup to final deadlift, making sure everything runs smoothly and helping athletes perform at their best.

A huge thank you to all of our coaches and assistants who volunteered their time on the day. We could not support this many athletes without you ❤️

📸 These are just the coaching crews. We still have photos coming from our referees, tech desk, spot & loaders, volunteers, and the full Team BNB group photo, so keep an eye out for those soon.

And finally...

A special shoutout to Pauly aka Sleepy, who spent the day guarding the warmup area and ensuring only athletes, coaches and officials got through. After a hard day of saying "Sorry mate, competitors & coaches only", even the toughest door bouncer needs a nap 😴

Luigi takes on Australia’s Strongest Woman 🇦🇺💪

Recently, Elissa “Luigi” Elissa Black represented BNB on the national stage in Sydney, competing in the U73kg class at Australia’s Strongest Woman during Meatstock at Sydney Olympic Park.

Originally from Hervey Bay and coached by Matt Coates since before joining BNB in June 2024, this marked another huge step forward in Luigi’s Strongwoman journey.

Luigi stepped up against some of the strongest women in the country and fought hard all weekend.

Australia's Strongest 2026 events:
• Carry medley
• Overhead medley
• Deadlift ladder
• Frame carry
• Atlas stones

Luigi's competition achievements included:
🔥 150kg deadlift
🔥 65kg log and 70kg axle
🔥 Loading a 90kg and 100kg atlas stones

National-level strongman is tough. Heavy weights, long days, pressure, fatigue and very little room for error, but Luigi kept showing up event after event and giving everything she had.

Proud to see another BNB athlete testing themselves at a national level competition 👏

A massive experience gained, plenty learned, and this is only the beginning 😤

17/06/2026

30kg squat.
35kg bench.
65kg deadlift.

None counted on the day, but I could not be prouder. ❤️

At 10 years old, Scarlett showed up, gave it everything she had, listened, learned, and handled the disappointment better than some adults would.

The deal was one scoop of Flour & Chocolate Patisserie Northgate ice cream for every PB she hit, so Saturday night ended with a well-earned three scoops 🍦🍦🍦

The lifts might have received 🔴 🔴 🔴 , but the effort, determination and attitude absolutely counted.

Proud Dad 💪

One last thing for the Hornets boys 💪

The 12-week strength and conditioning block may be over, but I wanted to make sure everyone involved had something to remember it by.

These custom BNB shirts have been organised for the boys, Coach Tom, Ari, Denzel, Coach Lala, Coach Porky and myself.

When this all started, I thought I was signing up to coach a footy team. What I didn't expect was how rewarding the experience would be.

To the boys, thank you for your effort, attitude and willingness to learn. Week after week you showed up, worked hard and got better.

To Coach Tom, Ari and Denzel, thank you for trusting BNB with your boys.

To Coach Lala Leila and Coach Porky Coach Rourke , thank you for your support every Wednesday night.

And to Dan Baker Dan Baker , thank you for the mentorship, guidance and words of wisdom that helped shape this project from day one.

As Dan said on my last post, one of the most rewarding parts of strength and conditioning is watching young athletes grow in confidence, develop physically and mentally, and become part of something bigger than themselves.

He was right.

Hopefully these shirts serve as a reminder of the work that was put in, the friendships built, and the foundations laid for future seasons ❤️

If any friends, family members or supporters would like one of these shirts, let me know soon as I will be placing a final order for extras.

Sometimes I wonder if people truly understand how much reviews like this mean to a small business owner.

Because honestly, running BNB is stressful as hell at times.

I love coaching.
I love powerlifting.
I love helping people build confidence in themselves.
I love the community we have built here.

But behind the scenes? There is also a lot of pressure that most people never see. Lease dramas. Plumbing issues. Equipment delays. Supplier frustrations. Neighbouring tenant problems. Long days. Financial stress. The constant mental load that comes with trying to keep this place running at the standard our members deserve.

There are definitely moments where I question whether it is all worth it.

Then I read something like this from and it lights the fire straight back up again ❤️

Seeing someone walk into BNB feeling anxious, unsure of themselves, struggling with injuries, or intimidated by gym culture, then watching them slowly grow in confidence over months and years, that is the stuff that genuinely matters to me.

Not just stronger lifters.
Stronger humans.

I have always wanted BNB to be more than just a gym. I wanted it to feel welcoming. Supportive. Approachable. A place where people feel comfortable asking questions, learning properly, making mistakes, and backing themselves.

And the coolest part is that this culture is not just because of me. It exists because of the amazing people inside these walls every day. The members who encourage each other, spot each other, celebrate wins together, and make new people feel welcome from day one.

So thank you PP, not only for the review, but for trusting me and trusting BNB over the past year 🙏

Reading this meant more than you probably realise.
Safe to say I got a little emotional reading it ❤️

Also, swipe through to the end if you want to see how serious and professional we are around here 😂

As Big Kev used to say... I'm excited! 😁

Today is the day.

Brisbane North Barbell is proud to be hosting the Australian Powerlifting Championships 2026, North Division, on behalf of Powerlifting Australia

To say I have been looking forward to this one would be an understatement. I have not managed to sleep past 5am for the last three mornings, my brain has been running through competition checklists, equipment, volunteers, flight schedules, lifter groups and a hundred other things. So if I look a little wired today, there is a good reason for it! 😂

Today we'll welcome 40 lifters aged 10 to 85, along with coaches, referees, volunteers, spectators and supporters for a full day of powerlifting action.

I also wanted to give a shoutout to a few people behind the scenes. Huge thanks to brear for designing our competition artwork and John Ellis for bringing it to life in print. Thanks also to Coach Luke Macarone and his helpers for getting our new competition banner hung earlier this week.

And a special mention to Michael, who informed me that "Australian" was spelt wrong on the banner. The brief moment of panic before I realised I was being trolled nearly finished me off. 😅🤦

Lifting commences at 9:30am.

If you have never watched a powerlifting competition before, feel free to drop in. Spectators are welcome all day, entry is free, and we have more than 90 chairs available inside.

A huge thank you to everyone helping make today possible, especially our 30+ volunteers, referees, scorers, spotters, loaders and helpers. Events like this simply do not happen without you.

Good luck to all competitors, coaches and officials today.

Let's put on a great show! 💪🏆

Newest BNB member spotlight, ESB .k.miller 🖤💪

❓ When did you start coaching at BNB?
💬 I did my first coaching session with Dave on the 3rd of April 2024!

❓ Why did you first start coaching?
💬 I always loved lifting heavy and wanted to get into powerlifting, but after injuring my lower back I honestly thought it would never be possible for me.

A friend found a local powerlifting gym with “cool strong chicks” and asked me to come along 😂

The second I stepped into BNB, I knew it was the place for me. Watching the attention to detail in coaching instantly made me feel comfortable and confident.

❓ What do you enjoy about coaching?
💬 The banter is elite 😂 But also the care and attention that goes into every session. Everything is focused around helping me lift well without aggravating old injuries.

Dave’s experience and knowledge makes you feel so at ease.

❓ What do you enjoy about training at BNB?
💬 The environment is unmatched. Great people, great music, great vibes, and no judgment or anxiety.

Also the OCD level organisation is a huge plus 😂

❓ Why did you join BNB as a member?
💬 It genuinely felt like home. I have made lifelong friends here while also finding a sport I genuinely love.

❓ Favourite BNB memory?
💬 Watching Thunder/Jas trying to get a knot out of Dave’s quad, with the screams and tears that followed 😂

❓ Any comments or stuff to add?
💬 If you have been wanting to try powerlifting but feel held back because of injury, you absolutely can do it.
BNB is a place where anyone can walk in and feel welcomed, supported and looked after ❤️

From being scared to lift with a bad back, to officially joining the BNB crew 🫡🖤

After more than a year of coaching together, it is awesome to officially welcome ESB as a member of the BNB community 💪

BNB vs the world, part 3 🌍💪

Whenever BNB members and coaching clients travel abroad, I ask them to snap a photo in a famous location. It has turned into a bit of a tradition over the years, collecting BNB shirts at iconic landmarks and unique backdrops around the globe.

After part 2 earlier this year, the collection has continued growing quickly, and part 4 is already in the works 😅

This time around we have…

Dayne .lean & Bron in Hakuba, Japan, one of the world’s most popular snow sports destinations ❄️🏂🇯🇵

Cody .cody with Mt Fuji in the background, Japan 🗻🇯🇵

Grumpy with Osaka Castle in the background, Japan 🏯🇯🇵

Kez, in São Paulo, Brazil 🇧🇷

Thunder and Twitchy with Mt Pulag in the background, the third-highest mountain in the Philippines ⛰️🇵🇭

Richard on the Great Wall of China 🇨🇳

(left to right, top to bottom)

Same gym, same community, different corners of the world.

If you have an overseas trip coming up, pack a BNB shirt, grab a photo at a landmark, and help keep it growing 🌍💪

39 years yesterday 🎉

I had originally hoped this post would be celebrating the arrival of BNB’s custom calibrated plates after around 1.5 years of waiting.

Instead… they arrived incorrect in pretty much every way possible 🤦‍♂️

Not exactly the birthday present I had in mind.

It has been a frustrating process, especially after putting a lot of time, money, and trust into trying to create something special for the gym, only for the finished product to not match what was ordered.

But I suppose that is part of business sometimes.

Over the years BNB has survived:
• COVID shutdowns
• lease uncertainty
• equipment delays
• supplier headaches

And somehow we are still here.

At the end of the day, plates are just plates.

The people inside this gym matter far more, and I am genuinely grateful for everyone who continues supporting BNB year after year ❤️

Now back to chasing a full refund or replacement 😅
