Our Vision is to ensure an optimal health workforce to

Back to the bush 🌿🏥

Twenty-one future health professionals will return to North Queensland this July as part of Health Workforce Queensland’s GROW Rural program, supporting the development of the remote and rural health workforce.

As part of a broader rural immersion experience, this cohort will return regularly to the Tablelands, building hands-on skills and meaningful community connections that spark interest in pursuing rural careers.

This year’s visit includes:
✨ Sitting in a yarning circle with First Nations health professionals in Cairns, gaining insight into culturally safe care
🩺 Hands-on learning in rheumatic heart disease, which disproportionately affects rural and First Nations communities
🏡 Living like locals with billet families in Atherton
🪶 Participating in clinical skills sessions based on a rodeo scenario with local health professionals at Birdwing Therapies
🐎 Connecting with community at the Mareeba Rodeo
🧠 Exploring mindfulness and meditation in mental health care with Boonooloo Psychology

Far North Queensland welcomes 3 new clinicians 👏

Communities across Cairns and Cannonvale are set to benefit from improved access to primary care, with three new clinicians starting this month through Health Workforce Queensland (HWQ).

✅ Increased appointment availability
✅ Stronger continuity of care
✅ Support for managing chronic conditions closer to home

These placements are part of HWQ’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the rural and regional health workforce.

Over the 2025–26 financial year, HWQ has supported:
👉 73 GP commencements
👉 34 allied health and nursing commencements

Honouring Eddie Koiki Mabo and the landmark decision that recognised the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

It’s an important moment to reflect on truth, acknowledge our shared history, and continue working together toward reconciliation, supporting stronger, more inclusive communities across remote and rural Queensland.
