This past weekend was a big one for QUFW! A few of our team have just returned from the ASA Conference on the Gold Coast expanding their knowledge and network in the world of sonography. 💙

We are incredibly proud of our QUFW team who represented us on the the national stage, sharing their expertise and contributing to the conversations shaping the future of sonography in Australia. Well done to Teresa Clapham, Dr Jackie Chua, Associate Professor Rob Cincotta, Dr Aiat Shamsa, Allison Mander and Emma Wilsher. 👏

Events like the ASA Conference keep us at the forefront of the industry, and make professional development a priority for our team, which ultimately leads to better care for our patients 😊

We're proud to be a sponsor of the Fundraising Lunch this Friday 29 May at The Calile Hotel, Brisbane. 💙

At QUFW, we believe in more than ultrasound. We believe in showing up for our community and this cause is close to our hearts.

As specialists in women's ultrasound, we see women at every stage of their journey. We know how much early detection, research, and better treatment options matter.

Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation funds cutting-edge clinical trials to improve survival rates for women and girls with gynaecological cancer. The work they support saves lives.

Dr Jackie Chua shares why this fundraiser means so much to the QUFW team. 💙

If you've had preeclampsia before, a new pregnancy can bring real apprehension and that's completely understandable. 💙

The reassuring news: many women with a prior history don't develop it again. But that history is still one of the most significant risk factors, and it changes how your next pregnancy should be managed from the start.

Here's what that looks like at QUFW:

Preeclampsia risk screening is part of our routine 13–14 week scan, and for women with a prior history, that screening carries extra weight.

Low-dose aspirin is likely to be recommended. Started before 16 weeks, it can reduce the risk of preterm preeclampsia by up to 62% and early preeclampsia by up to 82%. That window for that level of effectiveness closes at 16 weeks, so an early referral matters.

More appointments and earlier specialist involvement aren't a sign something is wrong. They're a deliberate strategy to catch changes early, when options are broader and outcomes are better.

If you're planning a pregnancy or have just found out you're pregnant and have a history of preeclampsia, speak to your GP about an early referral. The earlier we begin, the more can be done. 🫶

Big news in women's health! PCOS has a new name. 💙

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is now officially known as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

This is not just a rebrand. The previous name never fully captured what the condition actually is. Which is a complex, multi-system condition involving multiple hormone systems, insulin resistance, and a wide range of metabolic, reproductive, psychological and dermatological features.

For many women, that disconnect meant years of fragmented care, delayed diagnosis, and feeling dismissed.

The new name is more accurate, less stigmatising, and better reflects the full picture of what women with this condition experience.

What hasn't changed: PMOS affects 1 in 8 women. Diagnosis criteria remain the same. At QUFW, the way we perform your ultrasound has not changed, only the way it is reported.

If you have been diagnosed with PCOS, this is the same condition with a better, more accurate name. 💙

Preeclampsia remains one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity in Australia and first trimester screening is one of the most impactful interventions available to the referring clinician.

At QUFW, preeclampsia screening is performed routinely as part of our 13 to 14 week early anatomy scan. Our protocol combines maternal history, blood pressure, uterine artery Doppler assessment, and first trimester biochemistry (PAPP-A and/or Placental Growth Factor) to calculate individual patient risk.

Where the calculated risk of early onset preeclampsia exceeds 1 in 100 (e.g. 1/50), the result is classified as high risk and low dose aspirin commenced before 16 weeks is recommended.

The evidence is compelling. The ASPRE trial demonstrated that low dose aspirin (100–150mg at night, commenced before 16 weeks) reduces the incidence of preeclampsia before 34 weeks by 82% and before 37 weeks by 62%.

For first pregnancies in particular, screening carries additional weight. Without a prior obstetric history, risk stratification relies entirely on clinical and biochemical markers. Early referral for first trimester screening ensures your patient can be considered for commencement of Aspirin prior to 16 weeks. A patient’s individual suitability to take Aspirin is always an important consideration.

We welcome referrals for first trimester combined screening across our Brisbane, Southport, Tugun, Ipswich, and Toowoomba clinics.

Curled up cuddling the umbilical cord. 🥹

The third trimester or ‘growth’ scan is one of our favourite appointments for moments like this one. It sometimes provides an opportunity to see baby just as he or she will be born - with fully formed features and individual facial characteristics.

The third trimester is from 28 to 40 weeks. A growth scan may be requested by your doctor to check baby’s overall growth, position and estimated weight prior to delivery. Please note, not every pregnancy requires a growth scan.

We never tire of seeing moments like this. 💙
