Your degree gave you the foundation. Medicolegal competencies build on top of that.
Defensibility, impartiality, court ready evidence... none of this is taught in undergrad programs. It's specialisation training, like paeds or hand therapy. You learn it after graduation through mentorship, CPD and years of refinement.
The gap is normal. Every medicolegal OT started exactly where you are.

What if the thing that calms you down is something nobody's ever suggested before?

Sensory modulation is one of the most powerful tools in mental health OT. It works by using targeted sensory input to regulate your nervous system, grounding you when things feel out of control and calming an over aroused response before and during escalation.

Here's the thing: we all have 8 sensory systems, and every single one influences how regulated we feel. Your sensory preferences and sensitivities are completely unique to you. What helps someone else, might do nothing for you, and that's exactly why working with an OT to find YOUR toolkit matters.

(And yes, pickle juice really is in the research for managing dissociation. We love science.)

Save this if sensory modulation is new to you.
