Vehicle modifications get far less attention than home mods, but they are equally life-changing.

No vehicle access means no employment, no medical appointments, no community participation, and no social connection. OT assessment for vehicle mods draws on the same clinical reasoning as home mods, just applied to a different environment.
Most OTs overlook this area completely. The demand exists, but the supply does not. If you build this expertise early, you are filling a genuine gap in the profession.

Hannah is often the first friendly face you'll meet at MLEA and has a real gift for making everyone feel welcome at our practice.

With a background in admin and customer service, Hannah keeps the practice running smoothly behind the scenes, supporting our therapists, clients and families. She takes pride in building relationships and it shows in the warmth she brings to every interaction.

Outside of work, you'll find her on the netball court, planning her next trip away, or at home with her little wiener dog.

How do some OT assessments end up in front of a judge?

Medicolegal OT is a growing area of practice, where occupational therapists contribute to legal matters like motor vehicle accident claims, workers' compensation disputes, and public liability cases. Rather than working with a client toward goals, these OTs provide independent, objective opinions (on things like work capacity) that can be scrutinised and cross-examined in court.
And here's the interesting part: a report doesn't hold up just because it's clinically accurate. In a legal setting, it needs to clearly demonstrate the expert's relevant training, the reliability of the methods used, and independence from either party.

When a client presents as 'difficult,' what you're seeing is the tip of the iceberg.
The missed appointments, the disengagement, the flat affect... are all surface behaviours. They tell you something is going on, but they don't tell you what.
Below the surface: sensory processing differences, interoceptive difficulties, trauma responses, executive dysfunction challenges, belief systems built over decades. This is where the real clinical picture lives and where OT assessment is designed to go.
Complex clients aren't complex because they're ‘difficult’. They're complex because there is more to discover below the waterline.

Here's where a lot of OT reports fall down, straight from the lawyer's side of the table: an opinion with nothing underneath it.
Giving an opinion is the easy part. Backing it up is the job. What's your research? What's your critical assessment of the medical information, married up with the functional impairment you've actually observed?
Physical testing, range-of-motion testing, watching a person attempt the tasks they may or may not be limited by. Not a self-report you've written down, but an informed opinion you can stand behind.
Because in a courtroom, "this is our opinion" with nothing beneath it won't hold. The evidence underneath is what makes it defensible.
