Every afternoon, Mary sat by the window in the aged care home, watching people come and go.

The world outside kept moving, but inside, her days felt quiet… and a little lonely.

One morning, a staff member walked in with someone special.

He had soft golden fur, kind eyes, and a blue vest that said, “Therapy Dog.”

Mary looked up slowly.
For the first time that day, she smiled.

The dog walked gently toward her and rested his head on her lap.
Mary’s hands trembled slightly as she touched his fur.

“Oh,” she whispered, “aren’t you a beautiful boy?”

And just like that, the room felt warmer.

They didn’t need much talking.
He listened with his eyes.
She spoke with her heart.

For a little while, Mary didn’t feel forgotten.
She felt seen.

Soon, Mary began looking forward to his visits.
They sat in the garden, felt the sunshine, and watched the flowers move in the breeze.

The dog stayed close, as if he knew exactly where he was needed.

Mary was still living in the same room, sitting by the same window.
But something had changed.

She was no longer waiting alone.

Because sometimes, friendship arrives on four paws.

And sometimes, the best medicine… is companionship.

Sometimes the best medicine is companionship 🐶

Important Update for NDIS Participants Receiving SIL Supports

From 1 July 2026, changes are being introduced for Supported Independent Living — SIL providers.

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has advised that providers delivering SIL will be required to be registered specifically for SIL under a new registration group.

This means if you or your loved one currently receives SIL supports from an unregistered provider, it may be important to start asking questions now so there is no disruption to care later.

What is SIL?

SIL usually applies when a participant requires support for most of the day or around the clock to live as independently as possible in their home. This may include support with daily living tasks, routines, community access, personal care, supervision, and household support.

What should participants and families ask their current provider?

You may wish to ask:

✅ Are you currently a registered NDIS provider?
✅ Will you be registered for the new SIL registration group by the required date?
✅ What is your transition plan if registration becomes mandatory?
✅ Will there be any changes to staffing, rosters or service agreements?
✅ How will you make sure my support continues safely?

These changes are designed to improve the quality and safety of supports delivered in people’s homes.

At Ashand Care and Services, we understand how important stability, trust and continuity of care are for participants and families. As a registered, nurse-led NDIS provider, we are committed to supporting participants with safe, person-centred and compliant services.

If you are unsure how these changes may affect you or your loved one, we are happy to have a conversation and help you understand your options.

Your home. Your choice. Your safety. Your support.

Ashand Care and Services is currently registered to provide SIL-related supports and completed its midterm audit in April 2026.

The organisation has received advice from the NDIS Commission regarding the introduction of registration group 0138 for SIL from 1 July 2026.

Ashand intends to continue delivering SIL and will respond to the Commission’s notice of intention to vary registration accordingly.

Ashand will also commence internal review and preparation against the new SIL Practice Standards ahead of the next applicable audit cycle.

Are Your NDIS Supports Really Helping You Move Forward?

Many people think NDIS support is simply about “getting hours” or “using funding.”

But the real question is:

Is the support helping the person become safer, more confident, more independent, and more connected to their community?

At Ashand Care and Services, we believe good disability support should never be just about showing up for a shift. It should be meaningful, planned, safe, and focused on the participant’s goals.

NDIS supports should help answer questions like:

Can the person do more for themselves over time?
Support should encourage independence, not create unnecessary dependence.

Is the support linked to the participant’s goals?
Every support should have a purpose — whether it is building daily living skills, accessing the community, improving routines, or maintaining health and safety.

Is the person being treated with dignity and respect?
Participants should feel heard, respected, and involved in decisions about their own care.

Are risks being managed properly?
Safe support means understanding health needs, behaviour support needs, mobility risks, medication needs, manual handling, and any other important care requirements.

Is there clear communication between everyone involved?
Good outcomes happen when participants, families, support coordinators, allied health professionals, and providers work together.

At Ashand Care and Services, we are a nurse-led registered NDIS provider supporting participants across Brisbane, Logan, and surrounding areas.

We provide supports that are:

✅ Person-centred
✅ Goal-focused
✅ Safety-aware
✅ Culturally respectful
✅ Clinically informed
✅ Delivered with dignity and compassion

Because disability support should not just maintain someone’s life — it should help improve their quality of life.

Need support that is thoughtful, safe, and genuinely participant-focused?

We are happy to have a conversation.

Good news for older Australians receiving Support at Home personal care 💙

From 1 October, personal care will move from the “independence” contribution category to the “clinical supports” category for eligible Support at Home participants.

This means that if your Support at Home plan approves personal care and you have available funding, you may no longer need to pay contributions for personal care services.

Personal care can include support with things like:

🚿 Showering
👕 Dressing
🧼 Personal hygiene
🧻 Continence support
💊 Assistance with self-administration of medication
🚶 Mobility and daily living support

This is an important change because personal care is not a luxury — it is an essential support that helps older people stay safe, well, and independent at home.

You do not need to do anything right now. Providers are expected to contact participants and families to explain what this means for them.

We know Support at Home changes can feel confusing, especially when it comes to fees, contributions, and what is covered.

If you are unsure how this change may affect you, your parent, or someone you care for, feel free to ask your questions below or send us a message.

Let’s help families understand their options with confidence. 💙
