Caesarean recovery can feel straight forward for some women, while others, it can feel overwhelming and heavier both physically and emotionally than expected.

Understanding what can be involved in a caesarean recovery and what you may experience can help you feel better prepared, empowered and confident in seeking support if needed.

You may experience:
🌿 Reduced bladder sensation, this is where your bladders sensation of filling or feeling full is altered, affecting voiding. If the bladder is too full, this can cause abdominal discomfort.
🌿 Pelvic floor concerns including pelvic heaviness or pressure and urine leakage.
🌿 Scar soreness and bruising sensations, other altered sensations like tingling and numbess. Some women can experience an aversion to touching or looking at their scar.
🌿 Abdominal/core weakness.
🌿 Pain with movement or exercise.
🌿 Sexual pain following childbirth can be due to hormonal changes, vaginal dryness, healing issues and pelvic floor tension.

These experiences are common, however you don’t have to put up with them and they don’t have to be your new normal.

Individualised care involving progressive strengthening programs are critical for optimising recovery and wellbeing.

Save this info if you are a new or expecting mother and always reach out to a qualified Pelvic Health Physiotherapist if you need guidance in your recovery.

International Women’s Day 2026 💓

This week I had the absolute pleasure of presenting to a mother’s group that holds a very special place in my heart 💓

In what felt like a full circle moment, it was wonderful to give back to a group that in my most vulnerable time as a new Mumma, provided me with a place to feel heard and form connections.

This week I spoke about stress urinary incontinence (SUI), a highly prevalent postpartum condition affecting 20-30% of women in their first year following birth.

SUI is the involuntary leakage of urine caused by an increase in abdominal pressure, for example coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising or simply lifting up your baby.

Risk factors for SUI include:
- Vaginal delivery, traumatic delivery and multiple deliveries
- History of incontinence during pregnancy
- Chronic constipation
- Chronic cough
- Heavy lifting or high impact sports
- Hormonal changes during menopause
- Obesity

It’s common to experience, but NOT normal and can be treated.

First-line management includes Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT) under the guidance of a qualified Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, with an individualised treatment and management plan.

We also discussed the use of “The Knack” in anticipating SUI, along with questions around ligament laxity, hormone changes, and the importance of scar management for both caesarean and perineal scar tissue.

If this sounds like you, book an appointment at Peak Performance & Wellbeing for an individualised assessment and management plan.
