At MUOOZ, I see many first tastes.

This week, this young man came to try Eritrean food for the very first time - curious, open, and wanting to connect more deeply with flavours from home, with roots in Zimbabwe.

By the end of the meal, I could see it… that feeling when food becomes more than just something you eat. When it reminds you of where you come from, or helps you discover something new.

This is why I cook.
To bring people together.
To share our culture.
To make everyone feel at home at my table.

Shared from St Patrick College 🌟

IWD may have been last month, but Mama Saba's work empowering women happens 365 days a year.

On top of managing Mu'ooz, training our staff, and running our social enterprise, she's out in the community speaking at schools, meeting with ministers, and advocating for refugee and migrant women who need a voice.

Thank you, St Patrick College, for giving our Mama Saba a platform to inspire your students.

Every day is an opportunity to celebrate and empower women. 🌟

Today we were honoured to welcome Saba Abraham as our special guest for our International Women’s Day Assembly.

After arriving in Australia as a refugee from Eritrea, Saba has dedicated her life to supporting other refugees, uplifting her community, and promoting multiculturalism across Australia. She is the founder and manager of Mu’ooz Restaurant in Brisbane’s West End, a not-for-profit social enterprise that has trained and employed more than 400 women from refugee backgrounds since 2003.

Saba was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her outstanding service to African communities in Australia.

Reflecting this year’s International Women’s Day theme, Balance the Scales, Saba reminded our students that real progress takes action, creating fairness and opportunity so every woman and girl can feel safe, heard, and free to shape her own future.

Thank you, Renee Coffey, for capturing this moment!
Mama Saba meeting with the Hon. Andrew Leigh MP to discuss Mu'ooz's work supporting women from refugee backgrounds. Every conversation brings us closer to creating real pathways for change. 💛

It was a privilege to introduce our Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities, and Treasury Andrew Leigh MP to a wonderful Griffith local, Mama Saba OAM, at our Charities and Non-For-Profit Roundtable.

Mama Saba founded the Eritrean Australian Women's and Families Support Network and the Mư'ooz Restaurant in West End, helping people from refugee, asylum seeker, and migrant backgrounds settle in Australia.

Thank you to Mama Saba for attending this roundtable and for the incredible and vital work you do for so many in our Griffith community. Andrew Leigh MP Mu'ooz Eritrean Restaurant & Catering

A Message from Mama Saba

When I arrived in Australia as a refugee from Eritrea, the scales were not balanced for me. I had skills, determination, and dreams but no pathways, no recognition, no voice.

This International Women's Day, the theme "Balance the Scales" speaks deeply to my heart. Because balancing the scales isn't just about equality it's about creating opportunities for women who have been silenced, displaced, and told they are not enough.

At Mu'ooz, we are balancing the scales. We are giving women from refugee and migrant backgrounds the opportunity to reclaim their power, build their futures, and show the world their brilliance.

To every woman who has been told to stay small:
You are strong. You are resilient. You are brilliant.

The scales are shifting. And we won't stop until they are balanced.
