IWD may have been last month, but Mama Saba's work empowering women happens 365 days a year.
On top of managing Mu'ooz, training our staff, and running our social enterprise, she's out in the community speaking at schools, meeting with ministers, and advocating for refugee and migrant women who need a voice.
Thank you, St Patrick College, for giving our Mama Saba a platform to inspire your students.
Every day is an opportunity to celebrate and empower women. 🌟
Today we were honoured to welcome Saba Abraham as our special guest for our International Women’s Day Assembly.
After arriving in Australia as a refugee from Eritrea, Saba has dedicated her life to supporting other refugees, uplifting her community, and promoting multiculturalism across Australia. She is the founder and manager of Mu’ooz Restaurant in Brisbane’s West End, a not-for-profit social enterprise that has trained and employed more than 400 women from refugee backgrounds since 2003.
Saba was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her outstanding service to African communities in Australia.
Reflecting this year’s International Women’s Day theme, Balance the Scales, Saba reminded our students that real progress takes action, creating fairness and opportunity so every woman and girl can feel safe, heard, and free to shape her own future.
