Heart of Australia Heart of Australia delivers specialist healthcare to people living in rural and remote communities

Heart of Australia is a rural health program that embodies the most innovative approach to frontline specialist medical service delivery. Heart of Australia delivers monthly specialist medical investigation and treatment clinics to rural and remote communities across Queensland - breaking the grip of distance that denies rural and remote-area Australians easy access to specialist services. Currently operating in Queensland with a planned expansion to other states in the foreseeable future.

Our first cohort of NextGen Medic students for 2026 hit the road over the weekend and are already gaining valuable hands-on experience from their time spent in the wonderful communities along our southern route 🧡

Over the past two days, Ryan, Ryan, Emily, Lola, Alexandra and Riley have been assisting and learning alongside our cardiologist Dr Aroney and cardiac sonographer Bec at our clinic in Roma, seeing firsthand what it takes to bring specialist care closer to home.

Tomorrow, the journey continues as they roll into Dalby. If you see the Heart Truck out and about, make sure you say hello!

Keith has lived in the small Queensland community of Theodore for over 70 years.
His life was changed when he was rushed to Rockhampton Hospital in a life-threatening condition from a spontaneous spinal abscess.

For years after while managing his health, he had to travel for multiple days for specialist appointments- an incredibly time-consuming and costly journey he often had to take alone.

Once HEART 4 launched in 2021 and began making regular visits to Theodore, Keith was able to see our cardiac specialists from the comfort of his community.
During an annual stress echocardiogram with Heart of Australia, the team identified a fatal heart condition. Keith’s heart valve had deteriorated and it would need to be replaced.

Heart of Australia was built on the principle that all healthcare should be accessible for patients like Keith, because poor access leads to poor outcomes. Heart of Australia has been visiting Theodore every quarter since 2021, and we will be back in town on July 13th and 14th.

Thank you to our partners at Boehringer Ingelheim for capturing Keith’s story.

Traditionally, Aussies living in far-flung communities were excluded from clinical trials due to barriers in accessibility, cultural differences, geographic isolation and workforce capacity.

Luckily, Heart of Australia isn’t for sticking with tradition. That’s why we’ve partnered with like-minded organisations to bring clinical trials out to the regions. We currently have eleven active trials running, with seven still open for screening.

If you’re interested in participating in clinical trials or know someone who might be, check out our current trials and get in touch if you’d like to learn more about eligibility: https://heartofaustralia.com.au/clinical-trials/

Thank you to the incredible team at Big Rivers Tackling Indigenous Smoking for the support at Kalkarindji during our first lung cancer screening clinic delivered in the community.

It was wonderful to meet so many people and provide access to this care where it's needed most.

Our partners summed it up perfectly. When it comes to your health, be proactive not reactive!

It was such a pleasure to collaborate with our partners Arrow Energy, Black Toyota and It's a Bloke Thing Foundation at FarmFest to deliver 89 PSA tests and 130 basic health checks to those who travelled near and far to attend the show 🧡

See where we will go next on our website, and come and say hello.
