She explained that not everyone requires referral to a specialist palliative care team, and shared how specialist services can support people with specific or more complex needs.

When you join an ABCG meeting, you’ll be in the company of women living with metastatic breast cancer at many different stages.

Some are finding their feet.

Some have been walking this path for a long time.

All bring their own experiences, questions, and ways of coping.

There’s no expectation to compare or explain, just a shared understanding of what it means to live with MBC.

On International Women’s Day, we honour the women who speak, even when their voices shake.

When women ask for better care,

it gets improved.

When women refuse to be invisible,

they change the system around them.

When women speak about metastatic breast cancer,

it gets counted.

Metastatic breast cancer wasn’t always properly recognised.

It wasn’t always counted.

It wasn’t always prioritised.

It is now, because women spoke.

Today, we celebrate the power of women’s voices.

In clinics.

In support groups.

In boardrooms.

In research.

In rooms where change begins.

And in the quiet moments where one woman says to another:

“I hear you.”

What a special day it’s been at the ABCG Workshop yesterday.

Women, friends and family members came together for a day filled with thoughtful conversations, shared experiences and moments of creativity and connection.

A heartfelt thank you to for once again providing such a beautiful space, along with the wonderful facilities and food that help make gatherings like this possible.

We’re also very grateful to our speakers for sharing their time, knowledge and care with the group:

Dr Sarah Cunningham (Women’s Health GP)

Sarah Blessing (Registered Psychologist)

Bernard Houston (ABCG Board)

And thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a warm and supportive atmosphere throughout the day.

We were delighted to have ABCG Board Member Bernard Houston join us again at today’s workshop to lead one of his always-popular creative writing sessions.

Bernard began by inviting the group to play with words, starting with a collection of familiar clichés and gently twisting them into something new and memorable. It was a fun reminder that even small changes can make language more vivid and memorable.

He then guided everyone through a sensory writing exercise, using words gathered from the group earlier in the session as inspiration.

Soon the room was filled with people putting pen to paper, sharing their lines, and enjoying the creativity that unfolded, with plenty of laughter along the way.

Thank you, Bernard, for sharing your creativity with the group and for your ongoing support as part of the ABCG board.

We were so pleased to welcome Sarah Blessing, registered psychologist, to today’s ABCG Workshop.

Sarah shared a presentation exploring the connection between yoga and mental health, drawing on her background in clinical psychology and her interest in how body-based practices can support emotional wellbeing.

She spoke about the many ways yoga can help people manage depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic pain and stress, as well as how practices like mindfulness and gentle movement can support greater self-compassion and awareness.

Sarah also highlighted how accessible yoga can be, with options such as chair-based practice making it suitable for people with different physical abilities.

To finish, Sarah guided the group through a gentle yoga session, with participants choosing to practise either seated or on the floor. It was a lovely moment in the day, leaving many people feeling relaxed, calm and positive.

Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your knowledge and creating such a supportive experience for the group.

A huge thank you to Dr Sarah Cunningham, Women’s Health GP, for joining us as our first guest speaker at today’s ABCG Workshop.

With more than 40 years of experience, Dr Cunningham shared insights into menopause, cancer treatment, and the many ways these can intersect for women living with metastatic breast cancer.

She spoke about how cancer treatments can bring on menopause suddenly, the wide range of symptoms women may experience, and why it’s so important that care focuses on the whole person, not just the cancer. She also highlighted the benefits of treatments such as vaginal oestrogen in helping manage symptoms that can significantly affect quality of life.

During a thoughtful and wide-ranging Q&A, Dr Cunningham also discussed bone health, treatment side effects, and the importance of shared decision-making between patients, GPs and oncologists so women feel informed and supported in their care.

We’re very grateful to Dr Cunningham for her generosity, compassion and the depth of knowledge she shared with the group today.

There are parts of living with metastatic breast cancer that don’t fit neatly into appointments, scans, or treatment plans.

The uncertainty.

The emotional weight.

The feeling of being misunderstood, or simply not fully seen.

Groups like the Advanced Breast Cancer Group exist because medical care, while essential, can’t hold everything.

They exist to offer connection, understanding, and space, without judgement, fixing, or expectation.

For women living with Metastatic Breast Cancer, and for the families walking alongside them, that kind of support matters.

And it always will.

We wanted to share an update with our community.

Carly has now come to the end of her time with ABCG. We are deeply grateful for the care, insight, and generosity she brought to her role as facilitator. Carly was held in great affection by the women in the group and by our wider team, and her presence and contribution have had an incredibly positive impact on all of us. We thank her sincerely for everything she has given and wish her all the very best for what comes next.

Keely will continue to facilitate the group, supported by the full ABCG team. Our meetings and support remain unchanged, and we are currently in the process of recruiting an additional therapist to join us.

As always, we remain committed to showing up with care, consistency, and respect for the women and families we support.
