How does a child’s brain learn to control their body?
It starts with information
Every second, a child’s developing brain is receiving an enormous stream of sensory information from the world around them and from within their own body.
Their eyes tell what they can see. Their balance system tells them where they are in space. Touch tells them what they are in contact with. And receptors in their muscles and joints provide information about where their body is and how it is moving.
The brain takes all this info, processes it and uses it to continually refine movement, posture, balance and coordination.
Think about a toddler learning to walk. They wobble, step, lose balance, correct themselves and try again. Each attempt produces new sensory information for the brain to process. With repetition, the nervous system learns and those developing neural pathways become increasingly refined.
Every movement is both an output from the brain and new information going back into it.
And that brings us to an important question.
Where does the spine fit into all of this?
That’s what we’ll explore next as part of children’s health month at Life Chiropractic Centre.
Growing brains. Growing Bodies. Healthy Movement. Life Chiropractic Centre

Every movement is helping a child’s brain learn about their body.

September is Children’s Health Month at Life Chiropractic Centre.

A child’s brain and body are constantly learning together. From learning to hold their head up, roll and crawl, through walking, running, climbing and playing sport, movement is part of an extraordinary neurological learning process.

Every movement creates sensory information. The eyes, balance system, muscles and joints continually send information back to the developing brain, telling it where the body is, how it is moving and what is happening around it.
The brain processes this information and uses it to continually refine movement, posture, balance and coordination.
And this is where the spine becomes particularly interesting. The joints, muscles and tissues around the spine are richly supplied with sensory receptors that provide the nervous system with information about movement, position and load.

A child’s spine is therefore much more than a column of bones. It is part of an extraordinary communication system between the body and the developing brain.

Throughout September we’ll be exploring this relationship as part of children’s Health Month at Life Chiropractic Centre.

At some point you have probably twisted in your chair, heard a satisfying crack, and felt an instant wave of relief wash through your back.

You are sitting in traffic, running late for something, and without even noticing it your shoulders have inched up toward your ears. Your jaw is tight. Your hands are gripping the wheel a little harder than they need to. A few minutes later you catch yourself and consciously lower your shoulders, on...

Watch someone walk down a street and you can often guess a lot about them before they say a single word: tired, rushed, relaxed, in a hurry. What most people don’t realize is that the way we walk also reveals a great deal about what is happening in the spine, often well before any pain shows up.

Core muscles exist for a much more important reason than aesthetics. They are your spine's first line of defense, and when they aren't doing their job well, your back almost always picks up the slack.

If you’ve been working from home for a while, there’s a good chance your body has quietly been keeping score. The kitchen table that became a desk. The couch that turned into a second office.
