a lot of society is built around doing rather than being.
People wake up, go to work, pay bills, raise children, scroll, achieve, worry about money, make plans, repeat. And because everyone around them is doing the same thing, it can start to feel normal.
But gratitude, love and presence require us to slow down enough to actually feel our lives.
A few things can contribute:
• Constant stimulation — phones, notifications, news and social media keep our attention outside ourselves.
• Achievement culture — we’re often taught that the next goal, house, income, body or relationship will finally make us happy.
• Survival mode — when someone is stressed or overwhelmed, their brain naturally prioritises getting through the day over appreciating the moment.
• Emotional disconnection — many people weren’t taught how to express love, receive affection or sit with difficult emotions.
• Comparison — we’re constantly shown what everyone else appears to have, which makes it difficult to appreciate what is already here.
• Busyness becomes identity — saying “I’m so busy” can almost become a badge of honour.
And yet, underneath all of that, I think most people are craving the same things: love, connection, safety, meaning, belonging and to feel that their life matters.
You don’t have to live at that pace just because the world does.
There is something incredibly powerful about deliberately saying:
“I’m going to actually be here for my life.”
Notice your child’s laugh.
Feel the sun on your skin.
Tell someone you love them.
Eat slowly.
Be grateful for the ordinary things.
Put your phone down and look at the person you’re with.
Celebrate what you’ve already created instead of immediately chasing the next thing.
That’s not falling behind.
That’s living. ❤️
