Your Partner in Children’s Continence

Are you dealing with a child or adolescent with bladder or bowel problems and don’t know whether

to seek help? Our specifically trained Physiotherapists use the latest technology and scientific research to provide a specific diagnosis and treatment plan. Is your school-age child:
•still wetting during the day
•still wetting the bed at night
•needing to go to the toilet many times a day
•soiling their underwear
•developing recurrent urinary tract infections? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we may be able to help. Toileting problems are common but they do not always resolve on their own. We often hear parents say they hoped their child would grow out of it, but early intervention is usually more effective and less stressful. If something doesn’t feel right, a continence physiotherapist can help you understand what’s typical, what needs support, and how to make a plan forward.

Is It Really Just a UTI?

Recurrent urinary tract infections in children can sometimes be linked to how they are using their bladder. Poor posture on the toilet, not emptying properly, or pelvic floor dysfunction can all contribute to ongoing infections. A continence physiotherapist can help identify these issues, improve voiding patterns and reduce the risk of future infections.

Yes, kids have pelvic floors too. These muscles help control wee and poo, and when they’re not working properly, children might strain, leak, or have trouble fully emptying. Continence physiotherapists assess how these muscles are working and use age-appropriate strategies to help children gain better control. Early support can prevent frustration and accidents later on.

Bedwetting after age 6 is common, but it’s also something that can be addressed. It’s not your child’s fault, and there are many strategies that can help. At the Mars Clinic, our physiotherapists support families to improve night-time dryness using evidence-based approaches tailored to each child’s needs. We explain how the bladder and brain coordinate during sleep and how to encourage healthy patterns.

These may include difficulty sensing the need to go, avoiding toilets, or needing more predictable routines. Our team uses a flexible, strengths-based approach to work with each child’s individual needs and provide families with strategies that are realistic and effective.

Leaking urine when laughing, jumping, or playing sport isn’t always just excitement. It may be a sign that your child’s pelvic floor muscles need support. Children with pelvic floor dysfunction may struggle to stay dry during activity, which can affect their confidence in sport and play. Physiotherapy can help strengthen and coordinate these muscles so kids can enjoy being active without worry.
