🦵 **Stretch of the Week – Quad Stretch!**

Your quadriceps are the large muscles at the front of your thighs, and keeping them flexible can help support comfortable movement through both your **hips and knees**.

Here are two ways you can stretch your quads:

Standing Quad Stretch
Stand tall and hold onto a wall if needed for balance. Bend one knee, bring your heel towards your bottom and hold your ankle. Gently draw your foot back until you feel a comfortable stretch through the front of your thigh.

Quad Stretch Using a Chair
If reaching your ankle is difficult, you can use a chair for support or to help position your leg. This can make the stretch more comfortable and accessible while still targeting the quadriceps.

Regularly stretching your quads can help:
• Maintain flexibility around the hip and knee
• Support knee movement and function
• Reduce feelings of tightness through the front of the thigh
• Improve comfort with walking, stairs and everyday movements
• Support your overall mobility as you get older

Remember, stretching should feel like a **gentle pull, not pain**. Work within a range that is comfortable and safe for you.

At Coordinated Fitness, our Exercise Physiologists can help you find stretches and exercises that are appropriate for your individual needs. 💪

Here’s some statistics on the incidence of pelvic organ prolapse in women. Unfortunately this condition does impact many women. However, the good news is that there are lots of things we can work on in the exercise world to improve your management of this condition, including improving symptoms and modifying exercise to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you in your current condition.

🧘 Stretch of the Day – Seated Hamstring Stretch

Following on from our post about the importance of stretching as we get older, over the next few posts we’ll be demonstrating some simple stretches you can do at home.

Today we’re focusing on the hamstrings – the muscles at the back of your thigh.

How to do a seated hamstring stretch:

1. Sit towards the front of a sturdy chair.
2. Extend one leg out in front of you with your heel on the floor and toes pointing up.
3. Keep your other foot flat on the floor for support.
4. Sit tall and keep your back straight.
5. Gently hinge forward from your hips until you feel a comfortable stretch along the back of your thigh.
6. Avoid rounding your back or forcing the stretch.
7. Hold for around 20–30 seconds, breathing normally.
8. Return to your starting position and repeat on the other leg.

👉 You should feel a gentle stretch, not pain.
Maintaining hamstring flexibility can help with everyday movements, walking and general mobility.
Keep an eye out for our next stretch you can try at home! 💙

🤸 Why Stretching Becomes Even More Important as We Get Older

As we age, it’s common for our muscles and joints to become a little stiffer and our range of movement to reduce. Regular stretching and mobility exercises can help keep your body moving well and make everyday activities easier.

Maintaining flexibility can help to:

✅ Support healthy joint function – keeping joints moving through their available range can help maintain mobility and reduce stiffness.

✅ Maintain flexibility – flexible muscles can make movements such as reaching, bending, turning and getting up from a chair easier.

✅ Improve posture and movement – good mobility allows your body to move more efficiently during everyday activities.

✅ Support balance – having enough movement through your ankles, hips and other joints is important for walking, stepping and responding when you lose your balance.

✅ Reduce your risk of falls – flexibility alone won’t prevent falls, but when combined with strength and balance training, good mobility can help you move and react more effectively.

💪 The goal isn’t to be able to touch your toes — it’s to keep your body moving well for as long as possible!

At Coordinated Fitness, our Exercise Physiologists can help you work on the right combination of flexibility, mobility, strength and balance to keep you active, confident and independent as you get older.

Keep moving. Keep strong. Keep doing the things you love. 💙

Many people are aware of pelvic floor strengthening for pelvic organ prolapse. And whilst this may be an important part of an individual’s rehabilitation, there is more to prolapse rehab than this. We need to ensure the whole system is working well together to reduce downwards pressure on the pelvic floor and ensuring that all our muscles are working together optimally.

Not sure how to actually contract and relax your pelvic floor? Mikaela has some cues or tips they may help you visualise the movement better, which can help you better target the right muscles and movement pattern. Stay tuned, more to come!
