Yes, the GAPS Diet may feel a little restrictive when you want to go out and share a meal with family and friends, but there are a few considerations and/or adjustments you can make so that it doesn’t have to mean missing out.
The biggest consideration is where you are in your healing journey and which stage of GAPS you’re following.
If you’re working through the early Intro stages, I encourage you to take food with you. Alternatively, choose a restaurant that is happy to accommodate your needs. Breakfast can be one of the easier meals — eggs and avocado are often readily available for instance, and many places are happy to make a few adjustments to suit your dietary choices. Simply leave out the foods you can’t have.
It’s really about choosing your battles wisely. Ultimately, we’re nourishing your health, and the food choices you make along the way can play an important role in your outcome.
If you’re on Full GAPS, your choices can broaden to include more foods from outside the restrictive list, depending on what you personally tolerate.
The GAPS Protocol is about learning how to build a healthy relationship with food for life — not about feeling deprived forever.
So, when you’re at the right stage in your healing journey, an occasional indulgence can be part of enjoying life too. Go out, be with your people, share the meal and enjoy yourself. ❤️
Then come home, get back to the foods that make you feel good, and remember just how good healthy feels.
