💙 HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

Today is for the dads.
The biological dads.
The stepdads.
The foster dads.
The grandads doing another round of parenting.
The uncles, brothers and family friends who simply stepped up.

The dads doing school runs, packing lunches, coaching sport, fixing things, cooking dinner, working ridiculous hours and somehow being asked “Mum said to ask you” about something they know absolutely nothing about. 😂

The dads raising little people.
The dads watching those little people become not-so-little people.
The dads whose children are grown but who apparently remain on-call indefinitely. 😂

And the men who may not technically have Dad written beside their name anywhere, but have quietly become one through their actions.

Father’s Day can also be complicated.
For some, Dad is no longer here.
For some, the relationship isn't what they wish it were.
Some are doing fatherhood largely on their own.
Some desperately wanted to become dads and couldn't.
And some families simply look very different from the traditional picture.

So today doesn't need to fit neatly into one definition.

It's really about recognising the people who show up.
The lifts.
The advice.
The terrible jokes.
The practical help.
The phone calls.
The consistency.
The love.
Sometimes it's the big things.
More often, it's a thousand ordinary little things done over years that eventually become someone's childhood.

So to the dads, grandads, stepdads and all the other good humans doing the job

Happy Father’s Day. 💙

Hopefully someone else is doing the dishes today. 😂

🍹 WEEKENDS — LIFE OUTSIDE HAILZ RAIN & SHINE

AUSTRALIANS LOVE A DRINK… 😂🇦🇺

And apparently my winter drinks cupboard says hibernation.

Although, to be fair, Bundy tends to make its way into my house in bulk after trips to the cellar door whenever we're in Bundaberg. 😂

These two seemed particularly appropriate for the cooler months, Peanut Butter and Banana & Toffee.

Basically dessert masquerading as a nightcap. 😂

But spring is here! 🌸☀️

The evenings are getting warmer, we're crawling out of winter hibernation, and it's time to start thinking about what we're drinking, doing and discovering over the next few months.

So, Brisbane, what's on this spring?

🍹 What are you mixing or drinking?
🍸 Found a brilliant new bar, hidden speakeasy or little local gem?
🎶 What gigs, festivals or events are on your hit list?
☀️ Where are you heading now that it's warm enough to get out and about again?

This weekend for me ends with a Sunday night Skindred concert. 🤘

And yes... I'm eclectic. 😂

I'll happily go from the ballet and orchestra to metal festivals, then country, jazz, blues and just about anything interesting in between.

Music, food, theatre, festivals, weird little bars, markets, exhibitions...

🌼 FRIYAY — HELLO SPRING! 🌼

Spring is officially here! ☀️🌸

The days are getting longer, the windows are opening, gardens are waking up and we're heading into one of my favourite times of year.

And with a new season comes a little Hailz Rain & Shine housekeeping too. 🧡

🏖️ UPCOMING HOLIDAY / CLOSURE
Hailz Rain & Shine will be closed from Saturday 26 September through to Monday 5 October 2026, with regular services resuming Tuesday 6 October.

As always, we don't provide services on public holidays.

🎄 Christmas closure dates are still to come, and I'll give everyone plenty of notice once those are locked in.
And looking a little further ahead...

☀️ We will also have limited availability from 2–26 January 2027 for anyone wanting additional help over the summer/school-holiday period.

For now though...

WHY GOOD CLEANERS GET SNAPPED UP BEFORE SPRING CLEANING TIME 🧹🌸

Spring has officially arrived.

The windows get opened & need cleaning.
The weather warms up.
The sunlight suddenly highlights things we were quite happily ignoring all winter. 😂

And collectively, everyone starts thinking...
“I should probably organise a spring clean.”

The problem?
So does everyone else.

Spring is traditionally one of those times when enquiries for cleaners increase but good, reliable cleaners don't suddenly acquire another five days in their week just because September arrived.

Most established cleaners already have regular clients filling their schedules.

And that's exactly where we're at.
💚 Our regular schedule is currently at capacity.

But that doesn't necessarily mean we can't fit you in.

Throughout spring days become available due to things like:
🏖️ Regular clients going away
📅 Fortnightly roster gaps
🔄 Schedule changes
❌ Cancellations
👯 Extra team availability
🧹 Days we deliberately open for additional work

Rather than advertising every little opening publicly on social media, we offer these spots directly to people on our waitlist first.

Sometimes there's plenty of notice.
Sometimes it's:
“We've had tomorrow open up — would you like it?”

So if you've been thinking you'd like a spring clean, home reset or some extra help getting things back under control, don't wait until you see an availability post pop up on Facebook.

THINGS THAT HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING THIS DIFFICULT — HOME EDITION

This week’s nomination:
Getting the washing into the laundry basket.

Not washing it.
Not drying it.
Not folding it.
We haven't even made it that far.

We are simply attempting to get the dirty clothes inside the basket specifically designed to contain dirty clothes.

Apparently, the accepted household measurement system is:
0–30cm away: Close enough.
30cm–1 metre: Still laundry-adjacent.
Across the room: An ambitious attempt was made.
Directly beside the basket: Absolutely baffling. 😂
Extra points for socks.
Socks operate independently and may be discovered under beds, behind doors, inside shoes or in completely unrelated areas of the house.

And this is why home systems exist.

A laundry basket gives dirty clothes a home.
Whether members of the household choose to use that home is apparently outside the jurisdiction of Home Systems Management. 😂

Unofficial statistics suggest 93% of clothes placed beside a laundry basket genuinely believed they were close enough.

🤫 CLEANER CONFESSIONS
IF I’VE LEFT MY CLEANING TUB IN ANOTHER ROOM… 😂

Do I walk all the way back and get it?
Sometimes.

Do I also look around your house and think, “What have we got here?”

Absolutely. 😂

Because most homes already have a few perfectly useful cleaning products hiding in cupboards, under sinks and on benches.

Here’s what I’ll happily reach for from your stash:
🌸 Room spray
A quick freshen-up when I’m finished.
Because clean is great, but clean and smelling good is even better.

🕯️ Your scented candle collection
You know those beautiful candles you bought and then apparently decided were too nice to actually burn? 😂
I'll happily light one while I'm cleaning and blow it out before I leave.
You bought it. Lets burn the thing. 😂

🧴 Spray n Wipe / disinfectant
One of the most useful everyday products in the cupboard.
Benches, appropriate hard surfaces and high-touch areas, nothing particularly fancy required.

🚽 Toilet Duck / toilet cleaner
If there's toilet cleaner beside the toilet, I might use it.
Right product.
Right place.
Job done quickly rather than time wasted walking back to my tub.

✨ Dishwasher rinse aid
Now we're getting into proper Cleaner Confessions territory. 😂
It's not just something I notice sitting beside the dishwasher.
In the right situation, rinse aid can be a handy addition to my glass-cleaning arsenal because it's designed to help water sheet away and reduce spotting.

🫧 Washing-up liquid
Possibly one of the most underrated cleaning products in the house.
It cuts grease, works brilliantly for plenty of general cleaning jobs when appropriately diluted, and sometimes plain old dishwashing liquid is exactly what I need.

🧺 And if I'm doing your washing or running the dishwasher...
If you've got bicarb and vinegar sitting nearby, there’s a fair chance I'll put them to work too.
They're handy old-school staples for helping with odours, residue and general appliance maintenance.

I like keeping things maintained rather than waiting until there's a problem.

Just don't expect me to mix them together in a bottle and call it a miracle cleaner, that impressive fizz mostly looks more exciting than it actually cleans. 😂

And that's really the point.

I might arrive with enough cleaning equipment in the back of my ute to suggest I'm preparing for a small domestic emergency... 😂

But good cleaning isn't about owning every product on the shelf.

It's understanding:
What a product does.
Where it's appropriate.
And when to use it.

Sometimes the best product for the job is already sitting under your sink or nearby.

💚 Home Systems aren't about having more stuff.
They're about making what you already have work for you.

And speaking of more stuff...

😂 PEOPLE LOVE BUYING CLEANING PRODUCTS.
The supermarket shelves know it.
TikTok knows it.
And your cupboard under the sink definitely knows it. 😂

🛒 STORE-BOUGHT CLEANING PRODUCT REVIEWS
The products people keep buying.
The ones that actually work.
The ones I'd use differently.
The ones I'd spend my own money on.

And probably a few where I'll be asking:
“What exactly is this supposed to do that the other six bottles under your sink don't already do?” 😂

Because sometimes you need a different product for a different job.
And sometimes...
you really don't need another bloody bottle. 😂

🌼 MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY 🌼

A little late in the day, but perhaps that’s actually quite fitting.

Not every Monday needs to start with motivation, big goals or having your $@&t together.

Sometimes looking after your mental health is much smaller than that.
It’s noticing the daffodils that appear of a winter & other bulbs that flower yearly.
Opening the windows.
Sitting in the sun for five minutes.
Making a decent coffee or proper brew cuppa.
Putting some music on.
Or simply stopping long enough to appreciate something beautiful.

And in this instance, these pretty little things were brought for Mum and I by a very lovely, chivalrous gentleman 🌼💛 which made them that little bit more special.

Because sometimes it’s not only the flowers. It’s the thought behind them. Someone thinking of you, doing something kind simply because they can, and that little reminder that there are good people and lovely moments tucked into ordinary days.

Life can get incredibly busy, heavy and complicated and sometimes the things that bring us back to ourselves are ridiculously simple.

Winter is almost behind us, spring is starting to show itself, and there’s something reassuring about watching the world quietly get on with beginning again.

So if today hasn’t been particularly productive, positive or polished, that’s okay.

Find 1 small good thing and actually let yourself enjoy it.

💛 Be kind to yourself.
💛 Check in on your people.
💛 And remember, it’s okay to ask for help.

It’s been a little while between bird posts… 🐦😂
And apparently my rubbish bird photography is making a comeback.

Things have been a little hectic behind the scenes at Hailz Rain & Shine lately. Between our little team of just 3, the past few weeks have included sick kids, hospital visits for both ourselves and children, two funerals and all the usual unexpected things that life likes to throw into the mix.

Somehow, between the 3 of us, we’ve shuffled, swapped, rearranged and kept things moving and we’ve still managed to service all.

So a genuinely big thank you to everyone for your patience, understanding and flexibility when we’ve needed to move things around ❤️

We’re a small business and a very small team, so when life happens, it really does happen behind the scenes but we always do our best to make sure everyone is looked after.

Now back to the important business…
more of my questionable bird photography. 😂

These two are Australasian Figbirds, female in the first photo and male in the second. What’s particularly cool is that we’ve suddenly spotted them around both Carindale and Birkdale, despite never really noticing them at either place before.

Apparently they move around following seasonal food sources, so perhaps they’ve decided our parts of Brisbane is worth visiting at the moment.

Either way, I’m adding wildlife photographer to the list of services Hailz Rain & Shine absolutely does not provide. 😂📸🐦

THINGS THAT HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING THIS DIFFICULT — HOME EDITION

This week’s nomination:
Putting something back where it actually belongs.
Apparently, there are 3 recognised stages of putting something away:
1. Put it down “for a minute”.
2. Move it somewhere slightly closer to where it belongs.
3. Leave it there until someone eventually asks, “Why is this here?”
+ Bonus points if the correct home for said item is approximately three steps away. 😂

And this is why home systems exist.

Not because we’re striving for beautifully labelled containers and a house that looks permanently staged.

But because “I’ll put that away later” is responsible for approximately 74% of the objects currently wandering around Australian homes without a fixed address.

Statistic completely made up.
Phenomenon absolutely real. 😂

🏡 HOME SYSTEMS TUESDAY
SOMETIMES THE SYSTEM CAN WAIT

If there’s one thing I spend a lot of time talking about, it’s home systems, routines and creating a little more structure around busy lives.

But sometimes the best thing you can do is let the system go out the window for a little while. ❤️

That was pretty much my weekend.
Sunday started slowly with coffees, then breakfast at our local markets, wandering the stalls and picking up fresh bunches of herbs for the girls to peck their way through this week. ☕️🌿🐔

There were no vintage or retro treasures to bring home this time...

Although a completely innocent wander past the plants somehow resulted in several of those coming home instead. 😂🌸

The afternoon disappeared into pottering around the garden, finding homes for the new flowers, spoiling the girls and collecting beautiful fresh eggs.

Nothing particularly productive.
Nothing crossed off a list.

And that’s kind of the point.

Because good home systems are supposed to support your life, not become another thing your life has to serve.

Sometimes the washing can wait.
Sometimes the garden wins.
Sometimes you buy the flowers.
Sometimes you sit over coffee a little longer.
And sometimes, apparently, you write a Sunday post, fall asleep before posting it, get up Monday morning, watch the sun rise over the local waterfront...
…and don’t post that either. 😂

So here we are on Tuesday.
And maybe that’s actually a better lesson in home systems anyway.

Monday morning began beside the water after the rain had passed.
For a few minutes, there was nowhere else I needed to be.

Then it was back into the working week.

Having systems that keep a household moving matters.
Having routines that take some of the pressure out of everyday life matters.

But knowing when to put them aside for a while matters too.

The goal isn’t a perfectly organised life.

It’s building one that works well enough that there’s still room to actually live in it. ❤️

Coffees enjoyed. ☕️
Plants acquired and planted. 🌸
Girls spoiled. 🐔🌿
Eggs collected, as always. 🥚
Sunrise & Sunsets taken in. 🌅
Post two days late. 😂
Life carried on anyway.
