Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union

Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union Authorised by S. Beaman, Secretary, Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union, West End, 4101. Membership of the QNMU also provides for full membership of the ANMF.

The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) is the peak industrial and professional organisation for nurses and midwives working in public and private health and aged care in Queensland. The QNMU seeks to promote and defend the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests of more than 70,000 members. Members include:

Registered nurses
Midwives
Enrolled nur

ses
Assistants in nursing (however titled)
Students
Anyone who undertakes nursing work

There is no other organisation in Queensland which provides comprehensive representation for nurses and midwives as both employees and professionals. The QNMU is a state-registered union and a branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF), which has branches in each state and territory, which means the Union is also active in promoting the interests of nurses and midwives on a national and international level. Members have the opportunity to be actively involved in the QNMU and decide our priorities through the Union’s democratic structure. Ultimately, it’s these priorities and policies which help influence and shape the practice of nursing and midwifery in Queensland. Nurses and midwives, through the QNMU, have a long and proud history of working together to achieve improvements to working conditions, to the profession and, through the broader union movement, to the lives of all Australians. Nurses and midwives continue to work together and pool their combined resources and knowledge to protect and further the common interests of all members. Find out more at www.qnmu.org.au

The QNMU encourages and supports online dialogue on our social media forums, and we encourage members and users to be familiar with our social media terms of use at www.qnmu.org.au/SocialMediaTOU

Congratulations to Ruby Guminski, Registered Midwife, Toowoomba Hospital 🌟

FINALIST for the Midwife of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

“I feel so fortunate to work in a team where we genuinely support one another and share a focus on safe, woman-centred care. Getting to build supportive relationships with the women and families I work with to create positive change is what midwifery is all about for me."

🌟 Vote for Ruby: https://bit.ly/4v21yM8

Ruby Guminski relocated from the city to a regional hospital as a new graduate and has built a career grounded in continuity, relationships, and genuine woman-centred care.

Working within a dedicated antenatal continuity clinic model, Ruby supports the same women and families throughout their antenatal journey each week, and where possible, continues that support through birth and into the postnatal period. This model of care allows her to develop a deep understanding of each woman’s needs and to connect families with appropriate supports and referral services that can benefit them for years to come.

Committed to the future of the profession, Ruby has also embraced a mentorship role within a recently implemented program for new graduates across the health service, supporting the next generation of midwives through their transition into practice. She is grateful every day for the colleagues, the community, and the work that regional midwifery has given her.

Congratulations to Lorraine Woods, Endorsed Midwife, Weipa Integrated Health Service 🌟

FINALIST for the Midwife of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

“Every woman deserves access to quality maternity care, regardless of where she lives. Being part of establishing local birthing services in Weipa has been one of the most meaningful achievements of my career – knowing that families no longer have to travel away from their community for that experience means everything.”

🌟 Vote for Lorraine: https://bit.ly/4xhXOYv

Lorraine Woods is an Endorsed Midwife with extensive experience dedicated to clinical practice, leadership, and service to some of Queensland’s most underserved communities.

Educated as a Registered Nurse through one of the early university-based nursing cohorts in New South Wales, she transitioned into midwifery and relocated to Queensland, where she gained experience across public and private healthcare settings including Special Care Nursery, antenatal care, Birth Suite, and postnatal services.

She progressed into leadership as a Complex Care Coordinator, delivering telehealth support to high-risk clients in Brisbane, before taking on a Team Leader role overseeing clinical service delivery and staff coordination.

Most recently, Lorraine played a key role in establishing a Midwifery Group Practice birthing service in Weipa. This landmark achievement saw local birthing services commence in May 2024, giving families access to quality maternity care in their own community.

Congratulations to Natasha Keir, Nurse Practitioner, GenesisCare Oncology Queensland 🌟

FINALIST for the Nurse of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

“Survivorship care is so much more than follow-up appointments. People living beyond breast cancer deserve support that addresses their whole experience – physically, emotionally, and intimately. That’s what drives everything I do.”

🌟 Vote for Natasha: https://bit.ly/4g9WGjp

Natasha Keir is a Nurse Practitioner in Breast Oncology with GenesisCare Queensland, recognised for her pioneering work in survivorship care and her commitment to advancing holistic, patient-centred models of support for people with breast cancer.

Identifying a significant gap in care for those living beyond active treatment, Natasha developed the nurse-led Breast Cancer Wellness Clinics – growing what began as a single pilot into seven clinics now operating across multiple GenesisCare centres, supported by a dedicated team of specialist breast nurses.

Her commitment to holistic care has most recently been strengthened through the completion of postgraduate studies in sexology, enabling a more integrated approach to sexual wellbeing within oncology practice.

Widely respected for her contributions to clinical education and her advocacy for patient-centred care, Natasha continues to push the boundaries of what oncology nursing can look like – for her patients, for her colleagues, and for the profession as a whole.

Congratulations to Katherine Wickson, Multicultural Nurse Navigator, Logan Hospital 🌟

FINALIST for the Nurse of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

“When I saw the advertisement for Multicultural Nurse Navigator, I thought – could this be possible? My dream job, combining my passion for cultures with healthcare? I could not think of any other place I would rather be. It is an immense privilege to support such a vulnerable yet beautifully unique cohort every single day.”

🌟 Vote for Katherine: https://bit.ly/4dWTEhd

Katherine Wickson’s path to nursing was shaped by lived experience, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong passion for culture and connection. Having spent much of her childhood and adolescence managing chronic illness, life-changing surgery in her early twenties opened the door to a nursing career she had not previously imagined possible.

She began in Charters Towers, studying online with CQU while honing her early clinical skills in a close-knit rural community. Following graduation, Katherine completed her graduate year across the Gold Coast Health and Hospital Service before finding her passion for nurse navigation through the Gold Coast Integrated Care project – recognising that the role aligned with what matters most to her: helping people feel seen, understood, and supported.

Three years working as a rural generalist across Blackall and Barcaldine in the Central West deepened her understanding of health inequity, the power of relationships, and the resourcefulness required in rural practice.

Today, she works as a Multicultural Nurse Navigator in Metro South Health. Working with some of the most culturally diverse and vulnerable patients in the system, Katherine brings together everything she has learned – clinically, culturally, and personally – in a role she describes as her dream job.

Ever walked into a new role feeling confident, only for the self-doubt to quickly creep in? 👀

You're not alone. Many nurses and midwives experience imposter syndrome when starting a new role, changing workplaces or taking on new responsibilities, even when they're highly skilled and experienced.

The good news is there are practical ways to recognise these feelings, challenge self-doubt and build confidence in your abilities.

🌟 Read our latest CPD article, What to do about Imposter Syndrome, and explore strategies to build confidence and recognise your value in the workplace.

Congratulations to Emily Ebbage Miller, Registered Nurse, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency and Trauma Centre! 🌟

FINALIST for the Nurse of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

“I believe every nurse should spend time working rurally, even if only for a year. The skills, the adaptability, the confidence in your own clinical judgement – you can’t replicate that anywhere else.”

🌟 Vote for Emily: https://bit.ly/4xhnnsT

Emily Ebbage Miller began her nursing career as a rural generalist at Stanthorpe Hospital, where the breadth and pace of clinical practice demanded adaptability, critical thinking, and decisive action across emergency and perioperative settings, often within the same shift. That environment sharpened her clinical skills, broadened her capacity, and ignited a deep and enduring passion for rural healthcare and patient safety.

Recognising a significant gap in escalation processes for the perioperative on-call team, a challenge particularly acute in rural settings where geography and reception limitations create real barriers, Emily collaborated with medical and nursing leadership to develop a structured on-call team framework that has meaningfully improved communication and reduced delays where minutes matter. Emily’s focus on patient safety has been recognised through two Certificates of Appreciation from Darling Downs Patient Safety.

Equally passionate about the future of rural nursing, Emily dedicated her time in Stanthorpe to promoting rural practice to students and early career clinicians through interviews and engagement initiatives, with many students and graduates then choosing Stanthorpe to kick start their career. While in Stanthorpe, Emily became a QNMU Workplace Representative with a strong commitment to industrial rights and psychological safety.

Emily is now based at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency and Trauma Centre. She continues her advocacy, grounded in the belief that geographical location should never determine the quality of care someone receives.
