22.5 weeks - 5.5 months.

Bit of a personal post to explain where I’ve been for the past year! My husband and I have been walking the road of infertility since mid 2020 with different interventions and diagnoses along the way. This time last year we finally made the choice to do IVF, which as a huge needle phobe was a massive choice in itself. But it landed me in some sticky health situations post-stim cycle and in the hospital with severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). It had quickly developed after our egg pick up and ended with me accumulating excessive fluid in my abdomen and in both of my lungs and on a myriad of new injectable medications to mitigate my high risk of developing a blood clot in my lung or brain (I apologise if you were one of the people with an appt at this time who got constantly shifted around 😓). Anyway, long story short it was a very traumatic time and I needed to step away from the health space for a while - which has been longer than planned. I took time away from everything for 6 months before deciding to do an embryo transfer at the end of November, which has been such a blessing as we have been so lucky with our success. A healthy, VERY active little babe due in August 2025.

It's World Mental Health Day today. It's one day out of many that we can bring awareness to ourselves and others. We live in a hard world, full of comparison, over-achievement, high expectations and unattainable goals. We're constantly living in a state of sympathetic nervous system dominance with less and less ability to self-regulate. So, I ask you to bring awareness to this. Where can you stop and take some deep breaths? Can you do this daily? Can this evolve into a 5-minute meditation daily? How else can you set boundaries to protect your well-being?

Perioral Dermatitis (POD) is a relatively common condition that naturopaths see and treat quite a lot in clinic. This may be due to us living pretty stressful lives (thanks COVID), overusing things like steroid creams and/or eating like a gang of trash possums (hey, no judgement here, do what you gotta do during a pandemic, I ate a chocolate Easter bunny for breakfast). If you want to read a bit more about POD, have a look at my latest blog post on my website. You may laugh, you probably won’t cry, but you’ll certainly learn a thing or two about how to stop looking like you’ve got pash-rash 24/7.

Hello everyone ✨

I hope everyone has had a relaxing Christmas filled with drunk aunty’s telling you how much they love you then falling into the canal in front of your house and floating down the river to the neighbours (this happened once, excellent Christmas)

I wanted to introduce myself really quickly and assure everyone that this page will FINALLY be up and functioning early next year. Full transparency, business social media terrifies me. So I’m hoping we can all jump in together to help me work through my fears so I can start delivering some wholesome and realistic knowledge to you.

My name is Alana and I spent the better part of 5 years studying my Bachelor of Health Science to be a Naturopath. I aim to be as honest, down to earth and real as possible with you about how to implement positive, sustainable and achievable health goals. There won’t be any cookie-cutter, only-eat-organic-or-you’ll-die s**t on here. Also, hopefully it’ll be humorous enough to take the edge off any of the herbs I prescribe you to take cause f**k me, they taste bad.

If you have any pressing questions or would like to book in with me in the new year, feel free to DM me, email me or shout at me as loud as you can and I’ll try to hear you from wherever I am. I can’t wait to hear from you, treat you and succeed with you.

Now go eat more pud before your hungover aunt does.

SELF CARE ~

“Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing.

It is making a spreadsheet of your debt & enforcing a morning routine & cooking yourself healthy meals & no longer just running from your problems & calling the distraction a solution.

It is often doing the ugliest thing that you have to do, like sweat through another workout or tell a toxic friend you don’t want to see them anymore or get a second job so you can have a savings account or figure out a way to accept yourself so that you’re not constantly exhausted from trying to be everything, all the time & then needing to take deliberate, mandated breaks from living to do basic things like drop some oil into a bath and read Marie Claire & turn your phone off for the day.

A world in which self-care has to be such a trendy topic is a world that is sick. Self-care should not be something we resort to because we are so absolutely exhausted that we need some reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure.

True self-care is not salt baths & chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.

And that often takes doing the thing you least want to do.

It often means looking your failures and disappointments square in the eye and re-strategizing. It is not satiating your immediate desires. It is letting go. It is choosing new. It is disappointing some people. It is making sacrifices for others. It is living a way that other people won’t, so maybe you can live in a way that other people can’t.

It is deciding how much of your anxiety comes from not actualizing your latent potential, & how much comes from the way you were being trained to think before you even knew what was happening.

If you find yourself having to regularly indulge in consumer self-care, it’s because you are disconnected from actual self-care, which has very little to do with “treating yourself” and a whole lot do with parenting yourself and making choices for your long-term wellness.

It is no longer using your hectic and unreasonable life as justification for self-sabotage in the form of liquor and procrastination. It is learning how to stop trying to “fix yourself” and start trying to take care of yourself… and maybe finding that taking care lovingly attends to a lot of the problems you were trying to fix in the first place.

It means being the hero of your life, not the victim. It means rewiring what you have until your everyday life isn’t something you need therapy to recover from. It is no longer choosing a life that looks good over a life that feels good. It is being honest even if that means you aren’t universally liked. It is meeting your own needs so you aren’t anxious and dependent on other people.

It is becoming the person you know you want and are meant to be. Someone who knows that salt baths and chocolate cake are ways to enjoy life – not escape from it.”

We need constant reality checks when it comes to mental health. I’m far from perfect, and need daily reminders. But we can work together, building each other’s resilience to negative self-talk and support each other in our daily reminders. If you need help in incorporating some realistic self-care tools and/or lifestyle practices, please get in touch.

Apart from discovering my love for heated toilet seats and eating delicious ramen for every meal, I think this proposal might be a close favourite of the trip (so far). The ring is incredibly beautiful and to be honest an absolute weapon so I’m sorry if I accidentally gauge an eye out next time I see you. Definitely not safe for sleeping or woollen jumpers. This decade has started off pretty perfectly to be honest; with finishing my degree, travelling for the first time in a very long time and now this. I’m not sure I could be happier. But I guess there’s more heated toilet seats to be sat on ♥️ thank you to everyone who helped keep this a secret whilst Rhys planned this. What a bald angel he is ✨ @ 道頓堀 Dotonburi Osaka Japan
