This August, HandsOn is recognising Tradies National Health Month and shining a light on the health of the people who keep Australia moving.

Yes, we're called HandsOn but our Physio team looks after a lot more than hands and upper limb.

This is a custom thermoplastic splint, moulded by our Physiotherapy team following achilles tendon surgical repair. The goals are to protect the repair, maintain the prescribed ankle position and support a safe, staged rehabilitation. A moulded thermoplastic splint offers a more comfortable alternative to casting.

Every splint is shaped to the individual's anatomy and the surgeon's post-operative protocol, to support healing and the best possible functional outcome.

Allied health professions like occupational therapy, physiotherapy and exercise physiology just had a big win, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing that the $338.60 per week prac payments for allied health professionals undertaking clinical and professional placements will be expanded to include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, exercise physiology and eight other allied health professions.

This ensures more equitable access to anyone interested in studying occupational therapy, physiotherapy and exercise physiology, and gives students much-needed financial relief as they complete their mandatory, unpaid clinical placements.

Credit for this achievement should go to the Allied Health Professions Australia, who represents both Occupational Therapy Australia and the Australian Physiotherapy Association, who altogether raised a petition which garnered more than 51,000 signatures.

Allied Health Professions Australia (AHPA) has welcomed today's announcement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that the Commonwealth Prac Payment program will be extended to ten allied health professions from 1 July 2027, a direct result of a national campaign backed by more than 43,000 Australians

When life gives you a thumb spica, match it to your nails!

Our patient at Southport had only just treated herself to a fresh set of nails when she found herself needing post-surgical immobilisation in a forearm-based thumb spica orthosis........Not exactly the follow-up appointment she had planned.

But rather than let a necessary piece of medical equipment dampen her spirits, she leaned into it and we were more than happy to help. We colour-matched her custom thermoplastic orthosis to the same gorgeous colour as her manicure, because why not?

Here's the thing about hand therapy orthosis fabrication, it's both a clinical skill and a craft. Every orthosis we make is:
Custom fabricated to the individual's anatomy and post-surgical requirements.
Clinically precise - forearm-based thumb spica design providing the immobilisation her recovery demanded.
Patient-centred -because compliance improves when patients feel ownership over their recovery journey.

This patient wore her orthosis with confidence. And honestly? It looked great!

Recovery is hard enough. If we can make it even a little more bearable - or in this case, a little more fabulous - that's hand therapy done well.
