The Highlands Foundation provides funds, equipment and training opportunities for health care centers in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It was established by a number of Australian health care professionals in response to the poorly resourced health system in PNG. So far we have been able to support health services in Eastern Highlands, Western Highlands, Southern Highlands, East Sepik,

New Ireland, Hela Province and NCD. Papua New Guinea is a former Australian territory, and our closest neighbour, yet tragically its five million people suffer under a third world health system. Aims of the Highland Foundation:
To improve the existing health care facilities in the Eastern Highlands of PNG by:

1. Fundraising to secure medical supplies and transport them to PNG.

2. Raising funds to improve facilities at Hospitals, Health Centres and rural Aid Posts.

3. Educating highland communities about improving health outcomes.

4. Facilitating and advising volunteer teams of health care professionals, doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, etc, to travel to PNG to work with, educate, and up skill the local health care workers.

5. Provide education opportunities for PNG Midwives, Nurses and Doctors.

Our neighbouring country Papua New Guinea. Rich in Culture and Diversity.
Yet Papua New Guinea (PNG) has the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the Pacific region. It accounts for the majority of child deaths in the area. The maternal mortality ratio is roughly 171 per 100,000 live births, while some studies place the overall Oceania region, heavily weighted by PNG, at 494 per 100,000.

Key Details on Maternal and Infant Health in PNG:
Maternal Risk: A woman in PNG has a 1 in 120 lifetime risk of dying in childbirth.
Causes: High rates are driven by preventable conditions like post-partum hemorrhage, sepsis, and eclampsia.
Challenges: Contributing factors include limited antenatal care, lack of skilled birth attendants, long distances to health facilities, and limited medical resources.
Infant Mortality: PNG faces significant challenges with neonatal mortality, with early neonatal mortality (within 7 days) at approximately 14 per 1000 live births.

Labour of Love continues. Much more to be done to improve maternal and child health in Papua New Guinea. It takes a village and community to support our neighbouring countries who do not have the resources we are blessed to have in Australia. Be part of creating a better world for all.
