Steve spent the afternoon observing Dr Leigh Golding, current Sports Medicine Doctor for the Australian Cricket Team.

We love getting out of our own clinical space and seeing how other clinicians approach patient care. There’s always something new to learn, question and bring back to the clinic.

A few key takeaways from the afternoon:

1. Listen deeply — taking the time to understand someone’s pain and their story can help guide the diagnosis and treatment plan.

2. Explain the options — clearly discussing treatment options helps people make informed decisions about their health.

3. Give clear direction — providing guidance on the next steps while considering the bigger picture of someone’s health.

A great afternoon of learning, sharing ideas and continuing to improve how we care for our patients.

Stay tuned… more to come 👀

Is high-impact exercise really bad for your joints? 🤔

For years, many people with hip or knee osteoarthritis have been told to avoid running, jumping or other high-impact activities. But the latest research suggests the story isn’t that simple.

A study of 17,661 people with hip or knee osteoarthritis found that those who regularly did high-impact physical activity had:
✅ 36–48% lower odds of needing a hip replacement
✅ No increased odds of needing a knee replacement

Does this mean everyone with osteoarthritis should start running? Not necessarily.

The right type and amount of exercise depends on your symptoms, goals and current fitness. But this study adds to growing evidence that high-impact exercise isn’t automatically harmful for your joints.

👉 Swipe through to see what the researchers found.

💬 Have you ever been told to avoid high-impact exercise because of your joints?

Meet Dave — Slide 3 sums up his story perfectly but if you want more of his back story read on.

A carpenter who had lived with chronic low back pain for years.

Long days on the tools led him to describe his condition as “always having a bad back.”

Dave committed to building a stronger, more resilient back. He completed our GLA® Back Program, learning how to better understand and manage his pain while gradually rebuilding strength and confidence.

That journey didn’t stop there. Today, Dave continues to train in our strength-based semi-private classes, making movement and strength part of his lifestyle.

It wasn’t until his confidence grew that he mentioned his next goal. To climb Mount Kilimanjaro. 🏔️

And the result?

✅ Back pain has resolved.
✅ He successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Thanks so much for allowing us to be part of your journey and we’ve loved watching you reach your goals mate. Looking forward to Everest 👀

Got Shin Splints? Matt Howe talks us through what to look for

Pain along the inner edge of the shinbone is a major barrier to consistent training.

This condition is clinically known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), or more commonly, shin splints.

Presentation: Symptoms typically manifest as an achy, throbbing, or sharp pain along the bottom third of the inner shin. This discomfort often presents at the onset of exercise, temporarily diminishes during a warm-up, and recurs post-activity, lingering for hours or days.

Cause: MTSS is caused by repetitive loading and mechanical stress on the shinbone that exceeds the structural capacity of the surrounding muscles and tendons.

Management: Successful rehabilitation relies on deliberate load management—modifying activity volume rather than complete cessation. This is paired with targeted strengthening exercises and manual therapy to address soft-tissue restrictions and restore joint mobility.

📌 Differential Diagnosis: Because MTSS shares symptomatic similarities with more severe conditions—such as tibial stress fractures or chronic exertional compartment syndrome it’s important to have it assessed by a health professional.
