Something important is happening in the SDA world right now, and we want to talk about it openly. 💬
Some SDA providers are making the decision to step away from providing SDA services. Some quietly, some less so. And if your SDA provider is one of them, you might be feeling confused, worried, or unsure about what happens next.
First: your home is not at risk because a provider changes. SDA funding stays with you, and the transition process exists to make sure you are looked after. But it does matter a lot who steps in; and how well they do it because it does take a lot of coordination.
Here’s what we want people to understand about why this is happening:
SDA is genuinely complex. Being an SDA provider isn’t like being a landlord, we’re not just keeping the lights on and fixing the dishwasher. A good SDA provider:
✅ Understands your specific disability related housing needs. Not just the building, but how it works for you
✅ Navigates strict NDIS compliance requirements on your behalf
✅ Manages relationships with the NDIA, auditors, and tenancy laws that vary from state to state
✅ Advocates for you when things need to change
With Minister Butler’s recent NDIS reforms, the bar is rising further which will continue to create challenges on the business side for providers. This means providers who were doing SDA as part of a bigger business are making hard calls about whether it’s worth the cost and complexity to do it properly.
We get it. It’s not simple.
But when a provider exits, real people in real homes are affected. And that’s not something to manage with a letter and a phone number.
If you or someone you support has been told their SDA provider is leaving, please don’t panic, but do act. You have the right to choose your new provider, and you deserve one who is experienced, stable, and focused on SDA specifically.
