When most people focus, blood flow increases in the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for attention, planning, organization, impulse control, and follow-through. But in many people with ADHD, the opposite happens. As they try harder to concentrate, blood flow in the prefrontal cortex can actually decrease, making it even more difficult to stay focused and tune out distractions.
These images come from SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography), a specialized brain imaging study that measures blood flow and activity in the brain. A healthy scan shows full, balanced activity, while this ADHD scan reveals decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex during a concentration task.
It’s important to remember that ADHD isn’t one-size-fits-all. This scan represents just 1 of the 7 brain patterns associated with ADHD, which is why personalized evaluation and treatment matter.
