What thoughts come up for you when you think about money?

🧠 The spinal cord is more than a simple nerve cable. In cross section, the central butterfly-shaped gray matter is where signals are processed, while the surrounding white matter contains the major tracts that carry information up to the brain and down to the body. The posterior roots bring sensory input into the cord, the anterior roots carry motor signals out to muscles, and the posterior root ganglion contains the cell bodies of sensory neurons.

🛡️ This entire system is protected by the vertebrae and by three meninges: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. Together, they help shield the spinal cord while allowing it to remain connected to the peripheral nerves.

⚠️ Clinically, damage or compression in this region can cause weakness, numbness, pain, reflex changes, or even bowel and bladder dysfunction, depending on the level involved. That is why spinal cord anatomy is so important in trauma, disc disease, tumors, and neurological disorders.

Your client's chest tightens before they can name what's wrong. That's not anxiety. That's encoded memory.

Traumatic events don't store themselves as tidy narratives. They imprint as sensory-physiological patterns, which is why the body reacts before the mind catches up. Understanding this shifts how we practice.

Three principles every EFT practitioner should know:

✨ Sensory Imprinting
Trauma is encoded as a tightening chest, raised shoulders, a held breath. These patterns activate before conscious thought can intervene, which is why clients often feel distress before they can name its source.

✨ Nervous System Lock
Once encoded, somatic patterns become locked into the autonomic nervous system as protective responses. Polyvagal theory describes this as a failure to return to the ventral vagal state of safety. The body behaves as if the original threat is still present.

✨ Reconsolidation Window
Memory reconsolidation research shows that encoded memories become briefly malleable each time they are reactivated. This is the practitioner's window. Acupressure point stimulation paired with cognitive reframing can update the memory trace and reduce its somatic charge.

This is the physiological logic behind tapping. Not mysticism. Mechanism.

When practitioners understand memory reconsolidation, somatic awareness, and polyvagal regulation as a connected system, EFT stops feeling like a technique and starts functioning as precision work. 💛

What somatic pattern do you see most often in the clients you support?

It’s not one size fits all when it comes to regulating your nervous system.

Nervous system practices and self-regulation techniques should be picked depending on what state your nervous system is in. This means if you’re feeling completely shutdown and exhausted, you would pick a different practice to if you were full of anxiety or agitated, or feeling “wired but tired”.

We teach this as one of the very first tools in our program — learning to identify which state you’re currently in, and respond with the appropriate practices. This is really important, as without this awareness, you may really struggle to get anywhere with regulating your autonomic nervous system. Your body needs you to respond in the language it’s speaking with the messages it’s sending you.

For example, if you’re feeling numb and hopeless, your body is likely experiencing some shutdown. It needs help gently mobilizing to let your nervous system recognize safety and for energy levels to improve. Responding by trying to force your body to dance to music or shake it out in that moment for example may be too difficult. We want to match the remedy with the state, so the body can unwind or complete the stress response it’s in — not blast it with something that’s going to register as further threat.

💬 Comment QUIZ and we will send you a short quiz to help you see how much your nervous system might be shaping your health and wellbeing — and what you can do about it!
