What experience keeps showing up in my life that I usually dismiss, avoid, or wish would disappear?
We all have things we wish we could just stop doing, feeling or thinking.
But what if, instead of trying to get rid of them, we became curious about why they keep returning?
Maybe for you it’s…
* Always feeling responsible for everyone else
* Getting anxious when things are actually going well
* Pulling away when someone gets too close
* Becoming irritated by the same kind of person, again and again
* Saying yes when you really want to say no
* Feeling like you have to keep busy and can’t quite slow down
* Going quiet or shutting down during conflict
* Feeling overlooked, unheard or unimportant
* Having the same worry, memory or thought return
* Feeling tension, heaviness or restlessness in your body that you can’t quite explain
* Wanting something different, but repeatedly finding yourself back in the same place
Often our first response is:
Why am I like this?
Why can’t I just stop?
How do I make this go away?
But there’s another question we can ask:
What might this part of me be trying to tell me?
Sometimes the patterns we struggle with aren’t simply problems to eliminate. They may have developed for a reason, protected us at another time, or be pointing toward something in us that hasn’t yet had enough attention.
We don’t have to force an answer.
Sometimes simply noticing — there it is again — can be the beginning of understanding ourselves differently.
