Therapy can look like this 🌿

Sometimes therapy looks like movement, messy hands, problem-solving, animals, fresh air and learning through doing.

It can look like building, carrying, pushing, pulling, gardening, creating, practising real-life skills or simply taking a moment to slow down and regulate.

It can look like laughter, connection, confidence and discovering.

Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens when we’re doing, moving, connecting and participating in real life🐴🌱

Out of the Clinic, Onto the Farm: Developing Fine and Gross Motor Skills in Nature

While traditional clinic rooms provide fantastic support, the farm introduces a whole new dimension of physical problem-solving. For our clients in Bundaberg, combining nature with animal-assisted intervention provides powerful, real-world opportunities to develop strength and precision.

Here is how everyday farm tasks build crucial physical skills:

✅ Gross Motor Strength & Balance: Gripping and pulling a heavy garden hose across the yard to fill water troughs provides excellent "heavy work" for full-body strength. Navigating uneven dirt paths to visit the alpacas and donkeys challenges core stability and dynamic balance.

✅ Fine Motor Precision & Coordination: Sorting peas for the ducks or picking up individual pieces of kibble perfectly works the small muscles in the hands. Using both hands to turn a stiff water tap on and off builds vital bilateral coordination.

✅ Real-Life Independence: Because children are focused on a clear, motivating goal, like making sure the animals are fed and watered, they push through physical challenges without realising how hard they are working.

These purposeful activities directly translate into everyday independence, from sitting upright at a school desk to managing heavy school bags and fastening tricky uniform buttons.

🧠 What Are Emotions?

Emotions are signals from the nervous system that help us understand our experiences and respond to the world around us.

When recognising or managing emotions is difficult, it can influence behaviour, relationships, and overall well-being.

During therapy on the farm, people can slow down, tune into their bodies, and build emotional awareness through hands-on, sensory experiences.

🌱 What Happens in the Body During Big Emotions?
When someone feels an emotion, the brain and body work together. The amygdala detects a feeling or potential threat, the nervous system activates, and the body sends a message that something needs attention.

Nature naturally supports this process. The sway of trees, the warmth of an animal, the crunch of gravel, or the sweet smell of a flower all provide grounding sensory input that helps the nervous system settle.

🐾Together with a therapist, our farm environment offers a safe, supportive space for people of all ages to explore emotional cues and practise regulation strategies. Animals offer calm, consistent, and non-judgemental responses, making them powerful co-regulators.
