Something I have noticed a lot of people struggle with when it comes to media consumption is when to identify what type of person a piece is actually made for. If you feel a piece of media is engaging in a particular style or storyline that is alienating to you that might be a sign that you’re not exactly the target audience the writers are trying to speak to. I find that a lot of criticism of art pieces regretfully (especially now a days) boils down to but I don’t feel like this is interesting to me and yeah it’s not because it’s not speaking to you! Look I am not saying it’s bad to criticise something far from it as I love doing that myself but you should always keep in mind who something is made for as you do it or your critique will only be surface level and that’s a type of criticism I do not in fact approve of. If you’re only engaging in surface level criticism than you’re better off not looking into a work at all if you ask me. I am a hobby writer at best but one thing you learn very quickly when you’re writing a piece in any regard is that it’s never going to speak to everyone because that’s quite frankly impossible and honestly undesirable anyway. That’s why if you are a practiced writer you start to write in a way that speaks to the people you are trying to reach and intentionally off puts the audience your not. It’s a filter for the audience to allow for the people you’re actually not talking to to understand they should sit this one out but people especially those whom are most used to being the centre of attention for creative works are not always good at getting that hint. It’s not “bad art” just because you specifically don’t feel represented by it as sometimes art is meant to represent other people than yourself. To summarise all art is valid but not all art is meant to speak to you and that’s ok. Sometimes it’s important to give other people the floor and when that’s happening I want you from now on to repeat the mantra that has served me well in life to yourself “ this is clearly not for me so who is it for!” You’ll find out so many amazing things about yourself and others you love and loathe if you do that!
