Are your pre-employment medicals aligned with the role?

Different jobs come with different physical demands and health considerations.

Tailoring an assessment to the requirements of the role can help employers better understand candidate suitability and identify relevant health baselines where ongoing monitoring is required.

WHA provides role-specific workforce medical assessments across a range of industries.

How often do you review your workforce health requirements?

Workforce health needs can change as roles, hazards, regulations, and working environments evolve.

But when you're managing day-to-day operations, it's easy for health assessment programs to become something you only revisit when a requirement changes.

Regularly reviewing your workforce health program can help ensure assessments remain aligned with the roles your employees actually perform.

How has your approach to workforce health evolved as your team has scaled? Workforce health doesn’t stay static as a business grows; it changes with it.

In smaller teams, health and wellbeing issues are usually spotted through casual, day-to-day conversations.

As teams expand, roles shift, workloads increase, and remote workforces develop, those early warning signs become much easier to miss. In larger organisations, patterns matter more than individual moments, and prevention relies on systems rather than memory.

The key isn’t necessarily doing more; it’s adapting your strategy at each stage of growth. What worked when your team was 10 people won't be enough when you're 100.

Is anyone else ecstatic that Winter is over and Spring is now here?
We are already seeing more daylight, brighter days and warmer nights which can be very rejuvenating as we emerge from a winter dip.

As we change seasons there are a couple of areas to keep check of for your employees and workplace:

PPE: As the days warm up employees can sometimes opt for comfort, forgetting the importance of PPE, and removing masks or protective clothing. Where possible, swap heavy, insulated winter gear for lightweight, moisture-wicking, and high-visibility breathable PPE and manage workload with more frequent breaks to mitigate overheating.

Hydration and Early Heat Stress: The initial warm spells often catch workers unacclimatised. Hydration reminders and heat-illness awareness are an important workplace Spring task, even a few degrees warmer can result in dehydration or heat exhaustion if not managed.

Fatigue: Shifts in daylight hours and Daylight Saving transitions often cause short-term circadian disruption and increased fatigue, requiring extra vigilance during high-risk tasks. Allow our bodies time to adjust.

UV and Sun Protection: Increased UV radiation requires transitioning to high-SPF sunscreens, wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking eyewear, and revised outdoor shift rotations to avoid peak UV hours, where possible. We very quickly get out of the habit of wearing a hat and sunscreen during winter and high UV Spring days can catch us by surprise. Pop them in your work bag so you always have them with you and even set a reminder in your phone to reapply.

28/08/2026

As many of you may be aware, Australia is officially transitioning from the Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) to the new Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) framework for airborne contaminants, coming into full effect on 1 December 2026.

While December might sound like a while off, this is more than just a quick title update, it represents a major shift toward modernising health data, introducing new chemical notations, adjusting chemical limits, and reinforcing legal compliance across all state and territory jurisdictions.

Stay tuned for more information about these changes, what they mean for your business and your employee’s.
