One thing I've learnt after years in disability support, aged care and advocacy is that people can feel intention.
Participants can feel it.
Clients can feel it.
Families can feel it.
People know when someone genuinely cares and wants the best for them. They also know when something doesn't feel right.
Many people underestimate those living with disabilities or older Australians. They assume they won't notice things. In my experience, the opposite is true.
People know when they're being listened to.
They know when they're being respected.
And they know when they're being treated as a person rather than a funding package.
Disability support and aged care should never be about financial gain.
Yes, organisations need to be sustainable to keep providing services, but making money should never be the reason we get out of bed in the morning.
The reason should always be people.
At Mildura Disability Support Services, we have built our organisation on lived experience, advocacy and a genuine commitment to doing what is right.
We will always stand up for vulnerable people.
We will always advocate when something isn't right.
We will always challenge systems, providers or practices that place organisational interests ahead of the people they are supposed to support.
Because eventually, intentions reveal themselves.
The providers and workers who are genuinely in this industry for the right reasons earn trust.
The ones who aren't eventually lose it.
Every decision we make is guided by our values of respect, integrity and courage.
Not because they're words on a poster.
Because they're the standard we hold ourselves to every day. 💜
